Conference call brings flood concerns to the forefront

The 1 p.m. conference call with the National Weather Service and statewide emergency managers has been completed. Here are the main points: Our tornado threat in the Lafayette viewing area should remain on the low side. This could change if we get any sunshine at all this afternoon, but right now it looks like the clouds and rain will win out keeping our atmosphere more stable.

We are still watching a line of thunderstorms in Illinois that could graze our area this afternoon with some isolated wind gusts near 60 mph. The highest risk of those high wind gusts will remain south of Lafayette. So as of 1 p.m. and remember things can always change here in Indiana, our main threat will be heavy rain which could cause flash flooding. Many areas have already seen a months worth of rainfall since Friday and we could easily see 1 to 3 inches of rain this afternoon and evening. Remember most people die in Indiana not from tornadoes, but flooding. It only takes about 10 inches of water to sweep your automobile away.

Al Shipe, the State Hydrologist is not anticipating any major flooding on the Wabash River, but some more minor flooding is likely by later in the week and with more unsettled weather in the 7 day forecast we will have to continue to monitor the Wabash and our other tributaries very closely. See you soon and if we do have any severe weather Kelly and I will cut into programming with the very latest.

It certainly is coming down out there right now and almost feels a bit cooler.

Its good to know that the tornado threat is low but that flooding is not good news.

Thanks for the update!

And here in Remington I recorded .55 in just under an hour. Glad the tornado threat has lessened and will be watching the radar AND this blog :-)

This is the type of t-storm that I like, not severe! Yes the rain is comming down but not tooo hard, nice steady rain. And yes the temp has dropped a bit, but if you look to the west as of this point it is clearing, which means sun that could fule more storms???? at this point a nice summer gentle summer t-storm, In Laf at least for now!

I think the severe weather threat is still there...the precipitation shield has already passed parts of extreme western IN and CAPE values in excess of 3000 are possible later today. Mets in the Missouri and Illinois regions are already talking about increased tornado risks...including strong long-tracked tornados for their areas. That was originally forecast...and I think once clearing begins the original threat will return for IN as well.

South of Indy is getting hard with a big bow echo, hail and stong winds, with damaging winds, worry about folks in that area!

Very strange. We live on 900 East, and since the skies brightened a few minutes ago, I noticed the low level clouds and the wind is blowing from the southeast instead of from the northwest as it was before. It is eerie. Down to 66* here.

amazing....in Laf. I hear the sound of a law mower, after the rain and thunder. hear come the sun

Well at 4pm the sun is out looks like the skies are clearing up. Looking at the radar I don't see anything west of Indiana. Does this mean we should still be concerned about threats of tornados tonight with the sun out?

The sun has been shining for a while here now! Don't know if I should be happy to see sun or worried since it's been out so long that tonight could get ugly. Single pregnant mom needs an update ASAP! Dont wanna spend the night in my basement with baby unless I have to. Where are ya Mike!?!?!

Yeah kinda what I was wanted to know too.

I am ALWAYS happy to see the sun...but its got me a little worried right now.

Most forecasts still show t-storms for tonight...but I am getting the impression that its clear?

Yeah and guess what the extended forecast shows for next week? RAIN! Blahhhhh.

New SPC outlook now has us in the slight risk area, but still with a tornado risk. Only weak sunshine here in Brookfield Heights subdivision. Keeping fingers crossed that it doesn't get too bad.
