Weather Watches & Warnings Likely This Evening With Strong Thunderstorms

The sun is back out and a line of thunderstorms is forming in Illlinois. I expect it to arrive in our viewing area between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. Here is the breakdown of the threats within 25 miles of your neighborhood.

Localized flooding 40%
Winds greater than 60 mph 40%
Hail larger than dime size 25%
Brief isolated tornadoes 5%

I will have Live Doppler 18 fired up for you and see you soon. Our Friday tradition of stormy weather continues. The weekend forecast is also showing a chance of one more line of storms on Saturday. I will let you know when we will have the all clear tonight.

The severe T-storm watch in affect is just on the state line of IL and IN.
I would not be surpised that as this system moves, our veiwing area will be under a watch too, poss. into the wee hours of the morn.

With that system I was telling you all about in I'LL, there has been a tornado reported with it.

Thank you so much for the timeline Mike!

There really isn't much of a tornado threat...mostly a wind possibly derecho setup. Could get some hail though.

With any severe wx tornados can not be ruled out! and the derecho can be just as dangerous as a tornado only differnce is that a drecho is straight line winds that can reach 100mph! DO NOT LET YOUR GAURD DOWN WITH THESE APPROCHING STORMS!

How strong are derecho winds?
By definition winds in a derecho must meet the National Weather Service criterion for severe wind gusts (greater than 57 mph) at most points along the derecho path. In the stronger derecho events winds can exceed 100 mph. For example, as a derecho roared through northern Wisconsin on July 4, 1977, winds of 115 mph were measured. More recently, the derecho which swept across Wisconsin and Lower Michigan during the early morning hours of May 31, 1998 produced a measured wind gust of 128 mph in eastern Wisconsin and estimated gusts up to 130 mph in Lower Michigan.

Severe thunderstorm watch will be issued in the next hour.

Looking at the SPC at www.noaa.gov, there are only a few severe weather reports right now from Ill, including that one tornando in western Ill. Are these updated reports, so we can assume at this point there are not many reports, or it takes a while to update this information? This front is going to become more powerful?

Yes, I looked at the "Last 3 Hours" report. It is just kind of conflicting with what others are writng that is all, at this point there are a few severe weather reports only in Ill, although I do agree things can change of course in an instant. I will be watching this closely also. Still debating on attending the Relay for Life tonight, with 4 young children it is not easy to be out in bad weather! We may choose to stay home and be safe instead.

I will throw in my comments here. With any tornado touchdown there will be damage. It could be minimal damage, touching down in an open field or only touching down briefly. I would advise us all to be on guard and stay tuned both here and to TV-18 for updates. I have learned over the years that with the situation as it is now, meaning a strong cold front is approaching, strong sunlight to fuel the storms, and the high dewpoints we have, a watch for us will be issued close to the time the one to the west now is to expire. As I was typing my wx radio went off. My county is now included in that watch area (along with others north, south and west) until 11:00 p.m. our time.

This is a situation to watch, but Mike and the gang will be our eyes and ears. I pray there is not a derecho! The one I rememeber I watched on radar just a couple years ago. That puppy was coming across the MS River in Western IL and it took a right turn and slammed into St Lous, MO doing major, major damage. I think winds were 100 mph or better.

Do any of you have weather bug installed? it is free and has warnings (you have to set what warnings you want for what area) and chirps when they are issued. Mine just went off maybe 2 minutes after the wx radio.

Stay tuned!
