Homecoming Weekend Dries Out Before the Siberian Express Hits

Here is the big weekend weather update you have been waiting for! After receiving .53" of an inch of rain here at WLFI we no longer have to worry about any more rain. This is perfect timing with the Purdue Homecoming taking place today. Maybe our Boilers can pull off a win and get on a roll. If you are not going to the game you may want to take a nice drive as the fall colors are peaking around the state of Indiana. The skies may stay on the gloomy side today but the trees will more than make up for it! We should also have good camping weather as well and it is looking good for trick or treaters at Turkey Run State Park. Now how about the snow? Well, our chances have gone down to less than 10%. Notice I did put our snow concerns very low on the chart above and for good reason. There just will not be much moisture to work with the cold blast moving our way. The air mass arriving Sunday night is arctic in origin and is bone dry so I broke the news last night at 11 p.m. that most of us will likely not see any snow. It was a tough thing for me to do but none of my models including the WLFI model were holding out much hope. The snow chances may have fizzled but the arctic air mass is gaining steam. Look at those 11 p.m. temperatures last night up in Alaska and northern Canada! Ouch!

These areas above in the single digits, teens, and 20s have plenty of snow cover on the ground. Alaska has had its coldest and snowiest start to autumn in decades and this has allowed an awfully cold air mass to build up to our north and it will get a good push our way by a strong jet stream. It will feel like December here at home by late Sunday night and Monday. The other boot is about to fall!
A 30 degree fall in about 8 hours is quite impressive, but not as impressive as the wind storm about to hit our area. Expect 40 to 45 mph wind gusts Sunday afternoon and early evening ahead of our arctic front. The wind speeds at jet stream level will be up to 125 mph. Now that is what I call the Siberian express. The wind will still be gusty by Monday morning taking wind chills down in the teens so remember to wear the layers. The good news is this rough stuff will be out of here by time the kids trick or treat next Friday with a nice warm-up. It should be quite a treat but for now get ready for a December trick up nature's sleeve. Have a great weekend! Take care.

Justin, I just read your post from last night:) The scary movie I was watching was Wind Chill LOL! Was about couple who were stranded in their car during a snow storm, with all kinds of ghosts around.

We were sitting on the sofa with all the lights out, the movie was getting really spooky when I heard the loud noise outside, that is when the line of storms came through, with rain and wind. and my trash can blew into my neighbors house I almost jumped out of my seat, funny!

Glad to hear about the warm up for Halloween, the little ones will enjoy while on their venture to get their bags full of candy!

Yes we still go door to door, for we live in a neighborhood where eveyone knows each other, so its safe.

All have fun watching the Big Purdue Game today!

I wonder why the wind adviorsy is just for the counties North of Tipp.? I watched indy news this morning and they said 45mph wind gusts for them. And North of Tipp Co up to 60mph!

What is Tipp Co in for??? its already getting cold.

Anonymous said...

Yes We are expected to have some gusty winds between 40 and 45 Mph.

A big cold front is going to be moveing in by later tomorrow and we will feel it. You can also see on Jet stream maps that there is a big dip showing a big pocket of cold air on the way.

Everybody tie down your Halloween decorations!!!!!

So Justin, do think we will be under a wind adviorsy too? What does it take to have one issued??

Anonymous said...

A WIND ADVISORY MEANS THAT SUSTAINED WIND SPEED OR FREQUENT GUSTS
WILL OCCUR BETWEEN 40 AND 60 MPH.

Anonymous said...

Here is something to help from the NWS.

A WIND ADVISORY MEANS THAT EITHER SUSTAINED WINDS OF 30 TO 39 MPH
ARE EXPECTED TO LAST AT LEAST AN HOUR...OR THAT WINDS WILL GUST
TO BETWEEN 45 AND 57 MPH.

So we will have to wait and keep a close eye on it. When winds get this high it can make driveing much harder so you need to give yourself more time to get where your going. And be careful.....

You are right Justin, we will just have to wait and see what tomorrow brings wx wise.

I think its is cold already, a damp cold, that can chill the bones!

I am on Fall Break, so its sooo nice to be lazy, and watch the weather with all of you,

I have chili cooking on the stove along with apple crisp in the oven, a fire in the fire place and watching more, yes more scary movies, I love Halloween time:)

We did go for a drive this morning, and the trees are beautiful, however alot of leaves have fallen. If all are able, get out and enjoy the fall colors before the winds kick up!

Seems like we are jumping right into winter and skipping fall!!! Have we had a true Indian summer yet? If not I would like a month of it!!!

SEEMS TO BE THE PATTERN OF THE SEASONS LATELY, TO SKIP ONE RIGHT TO THE NEXT, VERY EXTREME. I WOULD ENJOY AN INDIAN SUMMER AS WELL, WE WENT FROM AC TO FURNACE.

Ya Teri, The wind is going good here to. The one good thing about it is when you look out the window and you see the leaves blowing around it really looks like a Fall day!!!!!

I have not found any new wind reports if I do I will let you all know.

Hey teri have you heard from Mary Ann, lately?? I have not seen her on here in a long time!

The WIND ADVISORY is now in effect for Tipp Co untill 8:00pm instead of 6:00pm, and counties north Tipp till 10:00pm.

Justin, I have heard from Mary Anne, she is one busy gal.

Funny about the leaves, my neighbors have huge trees and the leaves are blowing my way, I only have pine trees in my yard. So my yard, well my deck is heaping over with leaves, Almost like drifting snow LOL.

I am really loving this day! Enjoying while I can, funny I had our winter coats hanging on the line to dry, and boy did they dry fast. Sounds like we will need them in morning.

Wow this wind is really something I just could not pull myself away from the window. Watching the low level wind shear blowing the leaves like a mini tornado. It was really cool.....

It is getting chilly out there now I have a current temp of 49.6* and falling. I love it though.

The air is really dry as well.
