Quick Burst of Big Snowflakes A Sign of Icy Times Ahead

Huge flakes of snow on the southside!

Was it really 60 degrees earlier this morning and 64 degrees on Sunday! Yes! This is typical Indiana weather and I warned you about that lurking lion. The forecast is a tough one that is for sure. This is our weekly storm. Mark it down as our 14th since January first. But I still think we should dodge the worst of the flooding and icing. The storm track is still being suppressed farther south and east thanks to high pressure building in from the northwest. This is something we have not seen much of this winter. But something else we have not had too much of is freezing drizzle and freezing rain. This certainly becomes more of a threat by late tonight into Tuesday morning. Amounts will push .10" in some areas. As long as we stay below the critical .25" of icing we should not have to be concerned about power outages or total gridlock around the area. The main low trying to bring this batch of freezing precipitation is still located down in Louisiana so I will continue to watch it closely because it can still shift a bit increasing or decreasing ice amounts. But as of 9 p.m. here is what I have:

A quick .25" of snow fell on the southside of Lafayette this evening. Now we are going to transition into the lighter frozen type of precipitation. Those big wet snowflakes were sticking together because warmer air aloft is moving in while at the same time surface temperatures are falling to near freezing. So expect, a period of snow and sleet giving way to patchy freezing rain and drizzle as we head into after midnight. Ice accumulations of .10" are possible by morning so allow extra time. I see no other major changes to the original forecast this evening. As high pressure builds in to our north it will wrap drier air into the region keeping the heavier precipitation south of Lafayette. This should keep our rainfall totals under .50", ice accumulations mainly under .20", and sleet accumulations under .20". We could still see another burst of sleet and snow during the day Tuesday with a quick 1 to 3 inches so be ready and stay alert. Remember to slow it down on the roads so you can enjoy another warm-up by the weekend. I have some great pictures to share of our Dog N Suds over the weekend and Dr. Seuss day so make sure to check back!

Accuweather now has 1-3 of wet snow, a big downgrade from their 6-12 just an hour earlier.

I just checked accuweather and they still showed us as having 1-3 inches tonight, 1-3 tomorrow and an additional 1-2 tomorrow night. Where did you see the 1-3 total?

At this point I have no idea what to expect for tomorrow. Here lately they say 6-12 and we get 2 inches so it wouldn't surprise me to wake up tomorrow to find 6 inches on the ground. This worries me b/c I have a child in the TSC district on the West Side who rides the bus and I am a student at Ivy Tech that has to be there at 8am and leaves at 9pm. I don't want to get there only to get stuck because we get hit by 5 inches or more of snow and ice!

Don't worry, TSC never calls two hour delays when they should. =)

i know-they always call for delays when we don't need one but never do when the bus is slipping down the road!
