Frost Likely in 12 Days, Wetter Pattern By November!

Purdue on the Attack Against Notre Dame

Yes, it is only Wednesday, but I am already fired up for the nationally televised game against Ohio State this Saturday night here in West Lafayette. I remember Brees thr
owing a touchdown pass to Morales to seal the victory against the Buckeyes in 1999 like it was yesterday. Yes, history does repeat itself and this is our year. Our weather has certainly been repeating itself! It has been way too quiet, but beware we will likely be blitzed with plenty of hard-hitting weather over the next couple of weeks including a frost which is looking more likely. Do I have your attention now? Our routine weather will be a thing of the past and sooner than you think. I know it has been like we have all been stuck in the Never-Ending Story. We have brief bouts of rain and briefly feel like it is October, then we go right back into a summer rewind. It has not only been too warm, but too dry! If you got a nickel for every time I have said that in the last couple months we you would be rich and cruising in your yacht by now. :) But at least we did have some needed rain this morning as you see below. The rain washed all the spider webs away from my rain gauge.

Well, you can only go boating for so long. If it is okay I want our real weather back. Someone take the remote control from nature. I am done with this summer rewind. Well, I do have something to wake you up here today on the blog. We have a big pattern change coming as we head into the next few weeks. Now I do not see anything imminent, but despite highs near 90 by the weekend we could have our first frost by October 15th...until then feast on more summer weather, including a warm Feast of the Hunters' Moon which is next weekend. A "real" cold front should swing through here by next weekend but of course in this pattern, nothing is guaranteed and the timing of the front may still change. The key is to be patient. We need something to shake up our pattern and there are signs all over the globe that this is happening, including a developing La Nina. The cooling of the Pacific Ocean can have a dramatic effect on the jet stream which steers our weather. By mid-November we may be wishing for some of these sunny days. I will show you the big pattern shake-up tonight on the news and in the meantime here are couple maps showing how dramatically different the jet stream will be as we head into November.

Here is the current pattern with the jet stream detouring not only needed rain to the north but all of our autumn weather.

But this will likely change during November bringing wetter and cooler conditions. Most of the long-range maps do not agree on how much snowfall we will have this winter, but they do agree on a much wetter pattern for us. Not one but two of our country's main storm tracks will come through the Midwest this winter. I think this means not only a snowier winter than last year, but a higher risk of a significant ice storm. This may make you not miss autumn as much, or in my case winter cannot get here soon enough. Take care and thanks for reading.

One thing that always makes me nervous about above normal temps is Mother Nature ALWAYS evens things out. That means we have to have many days, eventually, below normal to make things even! EEKK!! I so want a nice, cool, fall. NORMAL would be wonderful!
