Snowy to Slushy With a Break in the Snow Until Late Tonight

Emily Jones sends in a picture of the beautiful scene greeting us this morning. How our world has changed in just a few hours! The good news is the road crews are quickly catching up on the roads with a break in the snow. The bad news is the slush is very hard for drivers to see and even though the roads do not seem so bad it is giving folks a false sense of security. Here is a picture of the slushy roads sent in by Justin New who probably got about 10 minutes sleep last night which is a few more minutes than me!

Numerous accidents have been reported around the area including interstate 65 near Lebanon so please be very careful out there even if the snow has stopped for now. If you can be patient the roads will continue to improve through the day as temperatures go above freezing and no accumulating snow expected until late tonight. You can see this in your day planner below.

The wind speeds will actually stay closer to 5 mph throughout the day and pick up out of the northwest tonight between 10 and 20 mph. The only surprise that nature threw us with this system was the dry slot moved into our area fast and furious. Take a look below.

We knew the dry slot was coming but it arrived a good 2 to 3 hours early and by 8:30 a.m. we were pretty much done. We really only had about a 3 hour period of moderate snow. This cut our accumulations in half. But overall the first call of 2 to 4 inches of total snowfall for today and Monday looks like it will prevail for most of the area. There will be some pockets of 3 to 5 inches closer to the lake and areas north and east of Lafayette by later on Monday with lake enhanced snowfall. The sad part is our nice snowy covering is turning to slush due to temperatures above freezing. It will not be the best sledding but for our first snow we will take it. In a nutshell nature has really let us off the hook. Even if you love snow, it really is good news with all the travelers out there today. Here is your snowfall map below that we will continue to update.

Justin New is on top of things and has some more picture postcards from this morning! Thanks Justin.

Now I need to go do some shoveling! A big congratulations to Amber Crider of Lafayette. She is our Golden Snow Shovel winner! I will have to ask her what her big secret is on long-range forecasting. Wow, what a great job! I just got off the phone with her and she is ecstatic! I would be too! She deserves free Mad Mushroom Pizza for the year after that great forecast. I need to hurry up and get out there before all the snow melts on her driveway! STRETCH....STRETCH 2, 3, 4....LET'S GO! Have a great day bloggers! Keep an eye on tonight and be careful out there. I will be back with pictures and keep those great pictures coming. I will post as many as I can. Even send in some dog pictures. Those are always great!

Good for you Justin, my camera is not working:( Is so beautiful out there, and yes very pretty photo Emily!

I have pine trees in my yard and the limbs are weighted down with snow. Wish I could get some pics.

Hey Justin, how are your dogs taking to the snow? Mine were surprised, and I could not get them to come in, they wanted to play catch, with snow balls. Silly critters.

I am sitting infront of my window watching the driping of melting snow:(

Is anyone else worried about this slushy mess freezing tonight?

I noticed that Mike has forecasted snow again next weekend! YEAH!

Anonymous said...

Yes, I have been watching, and the roads in the city of Laf, are mostly clear, the road crews have done a wonderful job. However I have not been on the county roads, I am sure they could be a mess.

And there is more snow in the forcast. We will have to stay tuned to the blog or our fav wx site.

From what I've seen on accuweather.com, we could see quite a good snow next weekend...
but thats pretty far out...Guess I'll just enjoy this one.

Anonymous said...

The wx channel just had a scroll that travel could be bad in the early am. with snow starting and wind just in time for the morning rush, 2 hour delay??? nope the students will be in the worst of it.

...ACCUMULATING SNOW EXPECTED TOWARD DAYBREAK ON MONDAY...

A STRONG AREA OF LOW PRESSURE WILL PUSH ACROSS CENTRAL INDIANA
OVERNIGHT. SNOW OVER ILLINOIS IS EXPECTED TO WRAP AROUND THIS
SYSTEM AND PUSH INTO CENTRAL INDIANA. SNOW FALL AMOUNTS AROUND 1
INCH WILL BE POSSIBLE...BUT SOME AREAS COULD SEE UP TO 2 INCHES.

FURTHERMORE AS THE LOW PASSES ON MONDAY MORNING...WEST WINDS OF
15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS TO AROUND 30 MPH WILL BLOW ANY NEW SNOW
ABOUT. THIS MAY REDUCE VISIBILITY WHICH CAN MAKE TRAVEL MORE DIFFICULT.

THIS APPEARS TO BE THE FIRST SNOWFALL OF THE SEASON THAT MAY OCCUR
DURING A MORNING RUSH HOUR. IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON TRAVELING ON
MONDAY MORNING...EXERCISE CAUTION...ALLOW EXTRA TIME TO REACH YOUR
DESTINATION AND REMEMBER YOUR WINTER TIME DRIVING SKILLS.

Dose the closings on the new web site work? I know all is being revambed.

Anonymous said...

OK here is the latest!

I'M looking at another Inch possible so we will put us in the
1" to 2" inch range! Winds will be between 20 and 25mph Winds could however gust near 30mph at times so we will have to be carefull!

So snowfall totals are not going to be anything big at this point and time!! Still we all know about slick roads!!

Now up north of us near the Lakes will see heaver amounts of snow!
do to Lake effect!

I am a huge snow lover, I almost never sleep when more than a couple inches of snow is in the forecast. However, I am a little concerned that issues we had with forecasts being off last year is rearing its ugly head again. If anyone else remembers every time we had snow forecast the totals would be significantly less than forecast. I hope that does not hold true this year.

Anonymous said...

Well, we did get the snow amounts forcasted for this am. snow is a tough to track. AS MOST SAID LAST YEAR, ONLY MOTHER NATURE KNOWS FOR EXACT

Anonymous said...

Accuweather.com says we could see 1-2"
tonight and an additional 1-2" Monday...What do you think Justin?

Anonymous said...

Well I have just looked at a few more things and I am trying to fine tune my stuff!

As of right now I am looking at around an Inch and a half! When all is said and done! Believe me I would like more!! But if we total up todays total snowfall with what we are expecting it will bring our total snowfall and final to somewhere between 2 to 4 Inch range! So What I'M saying is most likely another Inch to Inch and a half is possible! So I will stick as of now with that 1" to 2" inch range for tomorrow!

Also we will be cold out there as A cold blast hits! as well so don't forget your has as you go out!!
