Here are the amazing snow totals in from Louisiana. They are talking about renaming Sun, Lousiana....Snow, Louisiana after they were buried in 5 inches of snow. Tons of power outages were reported as the heavy snow weighted down a lot of trees causing them to fall on power lines. We talked about the Texas snow last night. The same upper-level low that brought the unusual snow to Houston moved east and really got its act together. Areas near Baton Rouge reported thunder snow which is thunder, lightning, and heavy snow all at the same time. This happens if you have a really strong storm system lifting the air rapidly, the surrounding air is forced to rush in to the void created causing plenty of charge in the atmosphere that can spark lightning.
That is exactly what happened. Joy who is a good friend of our chief blogger Justin New sent in the picture of all pictures. Notice her cacti are covered in snow and I was honored that Joy from Louisiana actually listened to our weathercast via the phone last night at 6 p.m. Joy, my goal is to expand our weather blog and become more national and even international. We would love to hear more from you and see your great pictures, although the picture you sent me may have been a once in a hundred year event. Joy who lives in the Baton Rouge area had about 4 inches while some other areas to the north of her had 8 inches which went down as the biggest snow on record and those records date way back to the 1890s. Check out another great shot of the snow from Joy in Baton Rouge.
Nobody got any work done, except those making snowmen and snowballs for snowball
fights. Congratulations and thanks again Joy. Where does this leave Lafayette's
chances of a White Christmas? Well do not despair. I keep us at 70% for snow on
the ground. Here is the graphic I showed to back it up on last night's newscast.
Here is the good news if you are dreaming of a White Christmas. The long-range models are all pointing to plenty of good chances of snow. An average of 8 inches is expected in the next two weeks. The pattern is going to be a beast. Take a look at why below.
Notice Lafayette will be right in the middle of the battle zone. It looks like the coldest of the weather will be out west and across the northern Plains between now and December 20th while a ridge of high pressure builds in the southeast. Since Lafayette is right in the middle of the temperature contrast that means we will have plenty of storms to track. I am also worried about ice in this type of set-up. Hopefully we can get to the winter solstice without a big ice storm. Once we get to December 21st I think the western trough will move east once again which will increase our chances for a big snow once again just in time for Christmas. So right now I think our best chance of a six inch or more snowstorm would be between December 21st and 25th. So the timing does look like it is on our side if you do like Christmas snow.
Yes, this pattern is growing big fangs just in time for tonight's big full cold moon. Blame not the meteorologist but the full moon. Monday is a perfect example of this werewolf weather pattern developing. We could have early high in the middle 50s and then fall to the middle 20s by evening with a sticking snow. I told Jeff and Niccole some models have thunderstorms and snow on Monday and a couple have both taking place at the same time. It is that kind of pattern. This got Niccole's attention since she has never experienced thunder snow before. This may all change by Monday. If you are blaming the full moon take a look at it below! This picture does look a little eerie, yet beautiful.
Monty Sloan out at Wolf Park had some fun with photoshop and highlighted the colorful clouds we have had across the area the last few nights. The full cold moon also stands out quite brilliantly and I have some more moon facts I will be sharing with you tonight. So make sure to tune in to find out how much bigger and brighter it will be than the typical full moon. I will also break down the latest on one of our busiest seven day forecasts of the entire year. I cannot wait to see you. Have a great day. I will make sure to run an extra mile before work today. That is what it will take for all meteorologists in this pattern. Here is a nice full moon type song I thought you might enjoy to get you through our Friday the 12th!
Last but not least, I want to also wish a special Happy Birthday to my brother Brian! He is the one that had to put up with me waking him up in the middle of the night if there were any big weather events happening or sometimes I would just wake him up to give him a new weather report. Luckily he was my younger brother so I am still alive to tell you about it. He is a great brother and I thank him for being really the first person that would listen to my thousands of weather updates and forecasts, even if he many times had no choice. Thanks Brian and Happy Birthday! I think he was very excited when I married Julie. He finally has some peace and quiet at night. Now you have to deal with me. LOL :)

Dear Mike,
I love Monty Sloan's photography and the latest where he doctored up the clouds over the moon were excellent. Does he ever frame some of his wolf photos as well and maybe sell them at Wolf Park? His photos have been awesome that he sends in for your blog as well as for your weathercasts on air. Please pass that along to him. Thanks, Kandy
Happy birthday to your brother Brian,
Mike Joy wanted me to let you know that hearing her name on TV last night really made her day!! :-) She had a blast! Even made her a little snowman! Her first! She also thought we get tired of snow being up north and all! I made it real clear I LOVE SNOW and cannot get enough!! :-) I still go NUTS when I see snow in the forecast!!

Annie I have been looking at the maps and models and I do see a system closer around christmas! If we do see snow With this weather pattern I think a wet heavy snow is likely!
I will keep watching for the Christmas forecast!! I want snow just as much as Mike does!! lol :)

I wish they would give you more air time on the weather report... i have to use a friends computer to hear the lastest! It would be great if they would give you some extra time so people like me that cant afford a computer can hear all the long range reports!
