Wind Chill Advisory Issued with Frostbite Weather on the Way

I have my second wind and feel great! Speaking of wind....watch out for our coldest temperatures of the season combining with brutal wind gusts near 40 mph. This is frostbite weather when your exposed skin can freeze in as little as 30 to 35 minutes. Remember here on the blog we were tracking this cold air mass in Siberia last week when they had temperatures near -70. A chunk of that air is on the way. The arctic or Siberian front will arrive around midnight so if you are doing some last minute holiday shopping make sure you hurry up! If you will be traveling anywhere tomorrow make sure you have a winter survival kit and cell phone in case you are stranded. It could literally save your life! Here is the latest temperature profile. These are temperatures without factoring in the wind.

Wind chills by morning will be near 10 to 20 below across much of the area and unfortunately once our wind chills drop below zero they will stay there for at least 30 hours or all the way through early Monday afternoon and that includes Tippecanoe County. So even if your county you see below does not have wind chill advisories through Monday you now know that all of us will have dangerous cold starting around 4 a.m. Sunday and continuing until 1 p.m. Monday. Snow showers will fly but I just do not see much in the way of snow. I think a half-inch will do tonight and maybe another half-inch during the day Sunday. It will blow around with maybe a few slick spots developing. The big concern I have are those that still do not have power and the weakened trees and power lines in our northern parts of the area. Once this wind and cold moves in it could create more problems in areas still recovering and cleaning up from the mess on Thursday night and early Friday. Tree branches not cleared away from power lines could cause more power outages which will be a huge problem especially with these dangerously cold temperatures. Make sure your tree branches are cleared away from those power lines. If you do not have power make sure you cover your pipes because they will freeze and make sure you stay in a warm place until this cold wave passes which will likely not be until Tuesday.

White Christmas Update: Latest model trends are still showing a fast-flow in the atmosphere with active weather continuing. If we stay all snow we would have the two to four inches forecasted last week but the problem is we are still stuck in an icy pattern with those warmer southwest winds aloft. So because ice is still likely to be in the mix, accumulations of snow and ice are very tough to forecast this far out. Tuesday into Christmas Eve will certainly be interesting. Stay tuned and even though none of us our dreaming of an icy Christmas we will certainly have to watch it closely. We still have a huge warm-up for Christmas weekend on the way and it looks like it will bring plenty of rain. Have a safe weekend and stay warm!

Much agreed. I would rather take some snow over this stuff. Negative 20!? That is CRAY-ZEE!

Laughable quote from Thursday Dec.4

The key stat of the night is that we average 5.9 inches of snow in December. This year I expect us to triple that number. I like us in the 15 to 20 inch range for snowfall just for the month of December and we very well could have a season's worth of snow which is 22.4 inches if all works out like some of these models are telling me. If we were playing cards nature has a trump card or all the cards in place for not just a cold and snowy month, but a historic one. I have seen this coming since August and it is amazing that everything is in place."

RE: Laughable Quote

Interesting that I would be tagged as bitter for quoting Prangly's forcast of only sixteen days ago. I know you are not a negative blog , it is one that allows no decent from what ever Mike says. I was not looking to bicker but simply dropping in a reminder of what I have seen year after year wih this guy and snow forcasting and being not just off but way off. What I have seen on here though makes me think some of you are better at this that the one you all seem to support without question. Not bitter, just know WLFI is NOT the place for accurate prediction. besides, we all know that anything further out than 10-12 hours or less is simply fortune telling anyway.

Take care and Happy Holidays

Yse Justin I did, but it is not place right, but did not get my wind sensor fixed yet....to high up

gosh grumpy people posting tonight

Teri

Anonymous said...

Sound like we both need to get a Wind sensor then! :) And Agreed!

Justin

Yep, where do you place you rain gauge, up high on a fence post or the ground, I have mind on a post.

Wow even the the wind sensor down still is showing high wind gusts.

Teri

Anonymous said...

geeze even with the wind sensor down, I am still getting wind gusts on my weather station

The lights are flickering here! Darn.

Teri

I have my rain gauge up on a high post away from all trees or anything that can get in the way!

My power and lights are doing fine right now!

Hope you don't lose power!

The Wind is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo BAD!!!!!

Night all Teri, I hope you keep power! See you all here later!

Good Sunday morning all! Yes! We kept power all night! Thank you God!

To RE: LAUGHABLE QUOTE--are you aware how MUCH SNOW would have fallen if all that frz rain had been SNOW? Might want to study wx some more b-4 you come here bashing Mike and the forecast. A few degrees either way and a few miles either way can make a HUGE dif in what happens at YOUR location. And, I might ask WHICH other TV station would you have us watch for more "accurate" weather????? words in BOLD are not hollering but rather for emphasis.

Okay, kids...back in a few hours.

Mary Anne in Remington

Anonymous said...

I agree with you Mary Ann! Thanks for your post.

Anonymous said...

"A few degrees either way and a few miles either way can make a HUGE dif in what happens at YOUR location." -Mary Ann

Which really is my point, so why make such sweeping predictions about how much snow we will get, weeks in advance, in the first place? One thing is true, the fanbase is loyal. And I do not recommend any TV weather broadcasts, there is plenty of info online as some of you know and use effectively.

Relax folks, this was nothing personal.

Anonymous said...

Because all held true, like MA stated there was plenty of moisture that is a fact, it came down as freezing rain, and Mike makes his forcast to the entire vewing area, folks north of Tipp Co did receive a lot of snow this December and are in the viewing area! Why dont you sign your name to your postings?

Rob

Anonymous said...

He also post forecast so far ahead of time because you all keep asking him to! How much snow do you think we will see for December?
He can only do so much!

And I would like to add if it was not for MIKE! We would not even have this Blog!

He also is the One who keeps us all updated and stays as late as needed when it comes to any kind of severe weather! (((MIKE THANK YOU!!!!!)))

Justin

Anonymous said...

Everybody here knows that meterology is not an exact science, and I, among many, really appreciate Mike's educated opinions on what MIGHT be developing days out. That's why I first began logging on to this blog. He always explains his thinking, and is the first to mention why a forecast might be in the midst of change.
There is no other station on TV or any internet site that is so focused on the Lafayette general area.
So...thanks again to Mike. Keep up the great work.

I think we all sould ignore the rude postings, not even respond, They are not worth our time!

Dont give the poster the thrill of getting everyone on the defence on Mikes behalf. They wont even sign their name!!!

We all know what a wonderful job Mike does!!!!!

How are things going your way Justin? the wind is bad as most of us know:( My car is froze, poor old thing, so I am stuck in when I need to do Christmas shopping!

Stay warm folks and dont let the poster with the neg. attuide bother you, they will give up if we dont respond.

Teri WINDY WINDY WINDY!!!!!
:) I did get a little snow flurries last night but nothing much! :(

Also I have to say a white christmas is looking iffy! :-( we are in this icy pattern and we could very well see on Christmas Eve a wintery mix of mosrtly rain on Christmas Eve! IF it would be all snow we would be looking at 2-4or 3-5 Inches! for Christmas! But not this time! I will still keep hope up till the day comes! Right now maybe just a few snow flurries!
We still got time for it to change! ((Trying to keep hope))
