Morning Snow Breaks Out With Winter Weather Advisory

Mr. and Mrs. Clause enjoy the nice dusting of snow this morning in Lafayette

A lot of times in these overrunning situations your snowfall and wintry weather can come a few hours early. The easiest and quickest way for the atmosphere to create precipitation is when you have warm air advection or warm air being lifted or forced over the heavier colder air at the surface.

Despite the snow coming in a couple hours early we are still on track with our expectations of this system. We will keep our 1 to 2 inches of snow and sleet before we switch over to freezing rain and rain. The inch of snow would likely be the top of the range for much of Tippecanoe County with only isolated amounts near two inches of snow based on the latest trends. A winter weather advisory is in effect until 4 a.m. This means travel with be hampered but we did not get the upgrade to a winter storm warning as expected which means things will not and should not get as bad as last week, especially with the freezing rain. Just remember to do everything very carefully and slowly if you are out on the roadways this afternoon and tonight.

The good news is we could see a lighter band of precipitation with the freezing rain which should hold our amounts close to .10" or less as forecasted. Most of our freezing rain and rain will be between 6 p.m. and midnight. As temperatures go above freezing late tonight it will turn to all rain. By morning all of our temperatures should be in the middle 30s with heavier rain overspreading the area.

If you are traveling South a freezing rain advisory continues for Indianapolis. The Interstate 70 corridor could be hit the hardest. Try to avoid traveling in these areas. Be very careful as those areas could easily see closer to the .25 of ice accumulation and we all know how much trouble that can cause after what happened here last week.

If you are heading to Chicago and southern Wisconsin today travel is really not recommended if you have not left yet. My family has put its holiday travels to Cheeseland on hold until at least tomorrow afternoon at the earliest. Chicago will see at least 4 to 6 inches of snow and sleet. Farther north in Wisconsin the cheeseheads could easily end up with 9 or more inches of snow. More on this with a special report coming from WISCONSIN later today. I will also check in with you from the Badger state later tomorrow on my family holiday vacatioin. Yes, I will be having a White Christmas!

If you are traveling west through Illinois conditions will be similar as Lafayette with the worse of the road conditions coming in by mid to late day and tonight as freezing rain and sleet mixes in.

Rainfall will be close to an inch with this system before it changes over to another band of snow Wednesday afternoon and evening. That is right! Both models are still showing some snow accumulations just in time for Christmas Eve night here at home. Keep hope alive! I will keep you updated on our White Christmas chances as we get closer.
One developing concern of mine: As we head into the holiday weekend will be flooding on area rivers and streams. The Kankakee River is already flooding due to heavy amounts of precipitation and ice jams. We will have to watch this situation very carefully especially if we do get another heavy rain producer for Friday into Saturday which could give us another inch or more of rain along with thunderstorms.

Bloggers take it away! Please send pictures if you can. Here is another one of our quick, slick coating of snow from the Prangley house.

I guess the good news is we shouldn't have to shovel. The warmer temps and rain should take care of the snow.

Hi T, J and the rest of the bloggers! I am making FUDGE!!! MMM-m-m-m. For gifts to the family. P'butter, fantasy fudge and buckeyes.

We have had really fine snow or is that snain?? I think there is liquid mixed in. Temp is at 25* and good new...the anemometer unthawed!!! yay!!

There are sad stories in our area. A family in rural Rens has lost their home to fire. No injuries but with them no being at home I am sure they lost everything as it burned to the ground. Then an young boy from Rens area has sustained severe injuries in an accident at his home. Here is the account from his uncle. Prayers would certainly be appreciated by this family.
*****************

He has a perforation in his bladder and a
hematoma in his bladder. They don't want to touch the blood clot (which is very large) because he could bleed out so they are watching it and said the body should absorb all the blood in time. He has 5 different fractured bones in his pelvis and he's in severe pain though his mom said he hasn't shed the first tear. He is on morphine and in good spirits and has a sense of humor. He's bummed they didn't
perform surgery because he wanted a big scar.
***************

So those of you who are bummed you are not getting a white Christmas please just be happy to have a warm home in which to count your blessings. Don't be bummed that the wx forecast is not quite what was forecast--please--count your many blessings.

Teri, I am watching the creek like a hawk!

All for now, back to making fudge.

If they would wait mother nature will clean their drive, but they haven't had much of a chance to shovel so maybe they are just enjoying it.

Anonymous said...

How said Mary Anne, those folks are in my prayers...You are right and what I have posted, we all need to count our blessings..What kind of accident did the little boy have, and do you know the cause of the fire???

O Lord please be with all during hard these hard times.

well justin I guess when company is to arrive you dont want an insuranc claim for them falling on your property,, nor does one want any to fall and get hurt. the old people are sliding in at this time...... ,and some are heading out, and scraping away at the ice on their cars...not easy to get off.

Just got back from making a starbucks run. Traffic is bad here in Lafayette. My gauge in my truck said 24 out when I got back. I love the snow but the darn sleet hurts. My 2 daughters kept asking why the snow was so loud. LOL had to tell em it wasn't snow. Our relatives got in around 12:30 this morning from Wausau, WI. The kids said it was warm here. LOL Hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday.

Looks like we may be lucky and catch the dry slot for a while. It should cut down on the freezing rain amounts. What say you Justin?

LOL, I just helped my neighor clean off his car, he has no heat in is car, poor guy.....Is a thin coating but solid...it took some time to scape...:(((

Teri

Anonymous said...

I am not justin, but looks to me that we could see a dry spot, however, its a very fine line at this time.....If you are talking tippecanoe county

Anonymous said...

I do think some of us may see a slight break however Ice totals should stay closer to a Tenth of an inch or less! I don't see us having to deal with anything like we seen last week! Which is a major +++++

Just got to brookston from Lafayette. The roads are snow covered. I saw 2 vehicles in the ditch off of 43. The traffic was going about 45 mph. That was plenty fast enough. I am suppose to go to work at the mall tonte till midnite. But am unsure if I should go. I have a ponitac Vibe and have to drive from brookston and do not get off till midnite. The other prob is I am still on my 90 days probation (got hired in Oct). Any suggestions?
Amy

Anonymous said...

Here in Brookston seems that the Ice is sticking on cars and roof tops not on trees. Is that a good thing? (I know it is for the electric lines) But does that say anything about how the roads will be later?
Amy

Anonymous said...

Fountain County and others in that area are seeing a brake in the sleet! If the system lifts to our north just a bit we will see a dry slot as well!

So Currently we are right on the ling! But even if we do not get the dry slot! I sill will keep the ice at a Tenth of an inch or less at this time!

Amy, WLFI is showing a number of canceltions in Laf, and surrounding area, I am sure they would understand, Call them....tell the how bad it is out your way.........if they demand that you go in then, ask them to provide provied transport, or even to try drive your way, and also ask for warm place to sleep for the night..plus food...its all about money for the stores not anyones safty, I do understand that many will need to get last min gifts but those gifts can come late, better be safe.
