Ice Storm Moves In With Thunder Reported in St. Louis

I wanted to make sure to check in with you before 11 p.m. The bands of ice we had at 6 p.m. will likely not be changed and the latest trends have held pretty steady on rain and ice amounts. Here is what I have for now. I am getting ready to go into a conference call! More on the thunder later.

Here is an ice chart and if you notice the main thing that I am concerned about for most of us is treacherous travel and walking conditions. I will be back!

I wonder what the air masses are going to do?? from what I have read it is going to be a thunder ice event in the northen counties. However, I think this storm is being fuled for all of the most of us , just my thinking, I am not good at tracking winter wx.

How nuts, the supers, of the school corps drive around at 4:30 am to see if the roads are safe??? Then they make the call if to delay or cancel school, do they drive a mile or so? They are not bus drivers, how can they make the call by just driving around themselves???

Just saw on the news by the way! So its the parents call if they want to keep their kid home even if the school wishes to not call a delay, but it will count againts our kids.SAFTY FOR OUR STUDENTS????

Anonymous said...

Nothing here west of Otterbein yet

Anonymous said...

channel 15 in Champaign is saying up to .50 for champaign of ice for west central Indiana...hmmmm

Anonymous said...

Hey Justin, it is very very light but is here! you were right:))

Teri in Laf.

Anonymous said...

Let the party begin.....NOT...raining now in Remington. temp at 24*

Anonymous said...

Why dont the superintendents call the county HWY instead of get out and drive in it.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Teri It just started here to!

Justin in Lafayette

Anonymous said...

I hope they do a replay of the superintendent or TSC speaking, I cannot believe the interview.

Any other concerned parents here??

Anonymous said...

oopss---dont laugh, I just opened the door to see if it was snow or sleet or rain...and I think it was the plastic on the windows out there rattling!!! ****BLUSH***

Anonymous said...

On its way Lafayette and Otterbein

Well I will be up all night watching this, and if my child gets penilized for not being at school during an ice storm, then I cant go high up cause its the super who drove around and thought it was safe.

Anonymous said...

It all comes down to where you get it!

Justin.

Anonymous said...

starting in the Klondike area. hope the winds dont cause power outages!

Anonymous said...

Upon further review, it is freezing rain here in western Benton County now. Snow is shiney and the porch rail is glazed over.

Anonymous said...

Really starting to come down, no longer a light mist near Kossuth St. Justin, you are just to awesome on your timing for this event!

Teri in Laf

Anonymous said...

OMGoodness...Benton County....you've really got me curious! Did I know you say, oh...maybe 10 years ago or so???? give me some clues as to your identity!! :-)

MA

A glazing already. in just a short time.

Teri in Laf.

Anonymous said...

MA Lets say I drive a truck and have for years. Your pics of the 91 ice storm gave you away.

Benton County

Anonymous said...

I hear it hitting the windows and the house what temps do you have in Laf? I show 27.1 I hear cars spinnig their wheels too

Anonymous said...

Glazing here as well!!

I have a nice MOD rain right now!
Getting slick out there! I'M trying to get pictures but not easy with it being night and all I may have to get some in the morning!

Justin in Lafayette

Anonymous said...

I have now fell to 28.6 degrees!

Justin in Lafayette

Anonymous said...

I'm sure schools will be closed. C'mon, who'd allow those big clanky orange vehicles to drive in this slick stuff with our precious children on-board? It would have been nice for the superintendent to have made that decision before tomorrow morning. How sad. And about the forecasting in this...good job, Mr. Prangley. But the 'A' by certain viewers has yet to be given. Sugar-coating is for candy makers. Weather.com, all night long, baby. Dead-on since this afternoon on the timeline of this developing situation. What were their national forecasters looking at that others were not?

Anonymous said...

Oh my goodness in just 45 mins or so the roads and walk ways are very slick, I have been hearing police and emerg, sirens.

Teri in Laf.

Anonymous said...

My temp has risen to 25* and I am going to lay down for awhile..take care all, and IF i keep power I will be back later or tomorrow.

G'night!

still holding at 27 degress here in Attica. The trees are showing a glazing of ice along with the streets.

Anonymous said...

Justin are you a storm chaser?

Richard

Anonymous said...

Not a Storm chaser just another person who has a Major Love for the Weather! Although that would be fun! :) I just like coming to this blog and I have been for some time now! And keeping one another updated!

Justin in Lafayette

Anonymous said...

why when checking the closing and delay site is all blank again, i know of at least one school delay posted early??? why is it gone? how frustrating better start updating that site!!!!! that is bragged about.

Anonymous said...

Richard, are you a storm chaser?

Anonymous said...

I do chase storms unprofessionally. I am going to take a storm spotters class this spring. I live with my camera and try to get pictures that are almost impossible. I have a couple of funnel clouds, great wall clouds and lightening pictures.

Richard

Mike has posted a few of my pics on his night weather casts.

Anonymous said...

It is foggy out there and and many accidents, all be safe, it is foggy too.

Anonymous said...

I am up in Logansport, we have a pretty good coating of ice on everything. Very slick. Can anyone tell me what Thunder Ice is??

Anonymous said...

I will tell you why no delays or closings yet for schools, finals are tomorrow and OMG they cant miss finals!! Its ridiculous that they havent at least delayed yet! I walked out to move my car 1/2 hour ago and it was raining, but was freezing on contact with car, drive etc...very glad my daughter doesnt ride a bus or walk if its this bad now i wont take her in...

Anonymous said...

BET YA. NO DELAY FOR LSC OR WLC MAYBE FOR TSC KIDS MOST KIDS WILL BE OUT IN THIS!!!!!REMEMBER ALL ABOUT SAFTY! HA! HOPES THIS LASTS TILL 4;30 AM

Anonymous said...

HI Anonymous in Logansport, Im in Monticello..I work in Logan and Lafayette so its good to know what the conditions are like there, I better start calling my houses!

Anonymous said...

Well we have lost 6 kids this first semester at Twin Lakes in car/bus related accidents, so it really doesnt surprise me that they are waiting. Its all about the finals at this point..

Anonymous said...

and how in the heck would we know without the WLFI delay site updated? and not even a scroll on tv!

Anonymous said...

So.....How about that thunder....what effect does that have on our current storm?

Anonymous said...

I believe it is from more moisture in the air interfering with warm air in the atmosphere and the cold air at ground level. So it creates thunder and perhaps lightning... Thats my guess. I may be wrong. A good question for Mike

Richard

Updated at 12:00 am, 12/19/2008

No closings as of now.

Anonymous said...

I think the thunder can produce more rainfall and more icing

Anonymous said...

This is my first time blogging. Does Mike answer any questions this late in the evening?

Anonymous said...

when the weather is bad yes....yes he keeps us updated from the staion and at home.

Anonymous said...

just keep an eye on the main blog

Anonymous said...

It seems like there is nothing going on where I am in Lafayette.

Anonymous said...

LMAO This is from the NOAA weather warning site for my county (white..monticello)

AT 1122 PM EST/1022 PM CST/...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A LARGE AREA OF LIGHT TO MODERATE FREEZING RAIN...MIXED AT TIMES WITH SLEEP

LOL now that isnt too bad a forcast is it?? :)

Anonymous said...

I am checking all stations for delays and the school web sight nothing yet for twin lakes...

Anonymous said...

Just got home from work roads are a sheet of ice in northeast Clinton County

Anonymous said...

I think thunder Ice is basically a thunderstorm where instead of just Rain hitting the ground in is freexing rain / Ice!

Just like Thundersnow! A thunderstorm where instead of rain falling to the ground it falls as Snow! And in can be really heavy!
