Second Line fo Thunderstorms Losing Steam, But Beware of the Wind!

Here is a brief update on the Illinois line of storms that has prompted a couple severe thunderstorm warnings. The actual line does appear to be rapidly weakening with lightning strikes quickly dwindling as it moves toward Indiana, but it will once again bring some heavy downpours and plenty of wind. The wind is the big thing to watch out for because even though these storms are falling apart the pressure gradient continues to tighten which means our gusts to 50 and 60 mph will be moving our way shortly. Expect another half-inch to one inch of rain between now and 10 p.m.

I was just reading that the Wabash will hit 20.0 ft by Friday in Lafayette. Then should recede. Whats your figures on this Mike?

Anonymous said...

We received an updated forecast with respect to flooding along the Wabash River. If the Wabash should rise to near 20 feet in the Lafayette area we should expect several areas roads to be effected. That will combine with the already developing problem of flooding taking place in low lying areas. Caution should be used when traveling side roads in particular. See below.

FLOOD WARNING EXTENDED UNTIL FRI FEBRUARY 20.THE FLOOD WARNING CONTINUES FOR THE WABASH RIVER AT LAFAYETTE.
* FROM THIS MORNING TO FRI FEBRUARY 20.OR UNTIL THE WARNING IS CANCELLED.
* AT 10:12 AM WED THE STAGE WAS 10.9 FEET.
* MINOR FLOODING IS FORECAST.
* FLOOD STAGE IS 11.0 FEET.
* FORECAST.RISE ABOVE FLOOD STAGE BY THIS MORNING & CONTINUE TO RISE TO NEAR 19.9 FEET BY FRI AFTERNOON. THE RIVER WILL FALL BELOW FLOOD STAGE BY THUR FEBRUARY 19.

* AT 20.0 FEET.EXTENSIVE FLOODING IS IN PROGRESS. FLOOD WATERS BEGIN TO COVER STAIR ROAD LOCATED ON THE SE SIDE OF THE RIVER JUST OFF SR 225 IN NE TIPPECANOE COUNTY. MANY RIVER CABINS ARE ISOLATED BY HIGH WATER. RIVER CABINS NEAR I-65 ARE AFFECTED BY HIGH WATER.

RIVER ROAD NEAR WABASH VALLEY HOSPITAL FLOODS. RIVER RESIDENTS BECOME CONCERNED.

William send them to me! I sent some to Mike but shoot, they are outdated as of now. Creek is REALLY in flood...debris from last time (around tree trunks) is almost covered up with flood water. Benton Co must have gotten a hard rain. We have only added .05 to the total making it 1.07 inches. It is thundering and the wind came plowing through. Highest gust has been 28 mph. I am located in northern carroll county....just one mile south of the white county line. Between Monticello and Burnettsville. South of HWY 24. It was raining so hard...about 10 mintues ago....I could not see the trees about 60yrds behind the house. With the rain. It was freaky. I am not a big fan of storms. Just went and looked out around my house from my windows and don't see any damage. Wind has dropped some but and rain has stopped.

I'm hoping this won't happen but gosh! How hard does the wind have to blow (speed) to burst through my window? It sounds scary and I'm afraid it'll break, but I guess that's just fear and not really thinking rationally. I know it'll be windy but not enough to bust my window right?

Anonymous said...

I don't know who posted about the windows...but I too have thought of that. The way they were rattling earlier, I pulled the curtains and we moved away from them. Kind of scary...I have now clue what it takes to do that.

My daughter just got home from tanning with a friend:( She was acutally frightned,,(she is not scared of storms) Stated a large limp fell on the car she was in, happened on Kossuth Street. lots of old trees. No damage but scared the daylights out of her.

Okay everone talking about window safety. I went through Hurricane Andrew in South Florida. I had a HUGE picture window in my condo. We put a twin size matterss up against it and nailed it to the frame, sounds kind of silly to some people but with the winds from a major storm like that, no tape or boards would have stopped that glass from blowing in. The glass would penetrate into the mattress if the winds would have blown it in. We survived abviously but safety always comes first even if you have to put a mattress on your window !

Anonymous said...
