Weather Radios Go Off! Winter Storm Warning Issued

Yes! Your numbers and reports have helped the National Weather Service immensely. A Winter Storm Warning has now been issued. I will be back with details. I can tell you the new model runs are showing another 3 to 5 inches of snow on the way!! The appetizers are now finished and let's all get ready for the real part of the storm. This thing has some house calls it will make before all is said and done!

WEATHER TEAM 18 ALERT: A WINTER STORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR CLINTON AND MONTGOMERY COUNTIES AND A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY CONTINUES FOR MUCH OF THE REST OF OUR AREA UNTIL NOON WEDNESDAY. THIS MEANS TRAVEL IS NOT ADVISED AND CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE TO DETERIORATE LATE TONIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY MORNING. AN ADDITIONAL 3 TO 5 INCHES OF SNOW IS STILL LIKELY WITH THIS STORM IN ADDITION TO WHAT WE HAVE ALREADY RECEIVED. AREAS TO THE NORTH INCLUDING MONTICELLO WILL ALSO SEE ROAD CONDITIONS BECOME DANGEROUS AS THE SNOW PICKS UP AFTER 11 P.M.

Hey Mike how does this storm compare to the huge snowstorm we had in 2007? Looking at all the moisture and the low not actually reaching us yet I think we are gonna get really high amounts.

Thanks,

Brad in Lafayette

William said...

Looks like northern IL s filling in as well so us northern snow lovers may get some as well.

Anonymous said...

The way this system is moving right now, and I will have to ask Mike about this, is that the Winter Storm Warning might come a bit further North and end in Tippecanoe County befroe the night is out. It still looks like it is forming in Arkansas and moving NE.

We appear to be right on the line as of right now and if we do not get all the snow that was said to have happened and it all goes south down toward Frankfort; Crawfordsville; and Indianapolis, we should consider ourselves VERY lucky, and with the way the waranings and stuff are currently set up, that may happen.

Anonymous said...

Looks like it's coming down fairly decently right now in Mulberry.

William said...

I posted this as the wx radios were going off, MA will appreciate this:)

My DD was headed for bed, She came down stairs griping that there was SNOW on her bed!

For some reason she had her window cracked open a bit, for what reason, I do not know, I asked if she was trying to heat the great outdoors?!

Any who, her window faces east, and the snow is blowing!!!

I will settle for the 3-5 range... I am glad its not a snowstorm and just an advisory. Like I have said before winter is for hibernation so I dont do to much on the outside unless it is to catch a nice photograph. For you snow lovers enjoy the sledding, snowboarding, tubing and snowmobiling.

Why are they waiting so long to cancel schools, seriously at least a two hour delay!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

let me tell you that it took me an hour to get home from work tonight.. i work in west lafayette and live on the south end of town. there better be delays or school closings. this weather is for the birds. Mike thanks for being a great weatherman and keeping us informed.. you are great..

Well I just looked at an interactive radar on the website of the WTHR in Indianapolis (WLFI needs one of those. They are cool to mess around with. You guys should put one on the site. I love them!!! lol) and the storm is still forming, with the end of it down at the Ozark Plateau along the Missouri/Arkansas Border. By the looks of things and with that moving thsi way, it's oging to be a long night tonight and a long morning tomorrow people!!!

Chad in WL

Anonymous said...

I dont think a two hour delay will be enough..and part of LCS has a half day tomorrow..so if there is a delay they go all day! I know I called the school early today!

They already have to make up two snow days. Guess they dont want anymore...gee

Anonymous said...

Chad dont you have to pay for that?

Anonymous said...

My new amount is at 2.25" inches.......... Melted it is 0.04"

Justin.

Anonymous said...

The schools wont cancel! they dont want make up days! Put the kids and bus drivers at risk makes since to me! and besides there is not a Storm warning!

Anonymous said...

Well I am in Clinton County and there is a Storm Warning here, they better start canceling!!!

Anonymous said...

Here 5 miles out of Attica I measured 2.25 just now.

Dustin

Anonymous said...

Looking on radar we can see in MO, and IL, there is that other band taking nice form and swinging this way to the main system!

We will see our amounts this time!!!!! It is going to be another long night!

Justin.

Don't know if anyone mentioned this...NO thunder snow...the low will not be close enough to us for this.

I am up to 4" new since it started.

Anonymous said...

It looks to me....since this storm is still hundreds of miles away....and looking at radars from here to Arkansas....if we don't see another 4-7...maybe a little more....I would be surprised. What I can't predict is any unforseen dry slot....I wish that I COULD SEE MIKE on the news!!!

Thanks all for wishing me well. I feel better and am about to go catch some zzzzs. Thanks William for the snow total. Teri, I cracked up at DD's snow story!

my anemometer is only showing 2 mph here in town, but I am sure it is blowing harder in teh country. Is the snow fluffy? it looked wet, but maybe not i ahve not stuck my head outside today and dont plan to tomorrow, either!

And please all, dont complain about whether we got the snow you wanted or schools not closing, get on your knees and thank our God for not sending ice to us!!

Chris in Tipton, I am happy for you with the 4 inches! and BTW you can have ALL of mine, LOL!

I am a teacher, and I agree with you. I would MUCH MUCH rather go to school in June when the weather is good than risk it on snowy, icy or very cold days. The risk is too severe.

Schools WILL close...but not until 5-6AM....

I will be curious to see...and I want to stay up to SEE...where the heaviest band(s) end up settling...
I would guess right across I-70 north into southern Boone, Hamilton and Madison Counties....I think WHERE they set up....and where it stays all snow....someplace will exceed 12 inches. I MAY BE WRONG....but the model QPF is there....and this storm is still precipitating in Texas!!!!

I have just a hair over 3 inches just outside West Lebanon. There's a little wind out here in the country, it is drifting just a tad bit, but not too bad. There were just some finger drifts in my driveway earlier!! Thank god for four-wheel drive. Off to bed for me and back to work tomorrow, I am coming off of a 4-day weekend. lafayette beauty academy is a vocational school. half the student body are highschool students and people under the age of 18.. so i think that it is important that we be notified whether or not we have school.

looks like a few isolated spots of moderate snofall for tippy and northern fountain counties.

Richard

Anonymous said...

Justin...??....Wanting to know what you are seeing as additional accumulation for the areas north of I-70....with the wealth of moisture....and the heaviest hours ahead of us....would you say another 5-7? 4-6? 3 far north and 6 towards Indy? QPF very impressive...

Chris in Tipton

Anonymous said...

i wish the schools would close or at least delay, why dont they do this until 5-6 am? How ridiculous some parents of little ones have to find child care for snow days!

I am in Monticello but have meetings tomorrow in Lafayette beginning at 11am I really hope roads are clear by then i dont want to have to reschedule again i had to already when the windchills got so dangerous!! LOL gotta love indiana!

I understand....and I feel your pain. I know how hard it is for Superintendents....they have to answer to the Board of Ed....and a lot of board members feel (I shouldn't say a lot...some....at least) that kids are too babied in this day and age...I say BS....it isn't a matter of babying...it is safety in the era of the 2000s.... I always appreciate knowing the night before...esp when it is obvious.

Chris in Tipton

Anonymous said...

I think when all is over we in the tippecanoe area will see between the 5" and 8" range. Up around Newton and Jasper counties I would not count out yet as they could see beween 2" and 5" inches. North of them 2" to 3" range.

William you will be back in snow before long!

wouldnt you think as tax paying parents that do fund the schools with our taxes that our childrens safety would be first?? Ok they might not like the extra days in summer but its sure better then having a horrible accident because the schools dont delay when they should in winter!

I did notice Lafayette schools have been alot faster then Monticello this winter to delay and close...that is not how it has been in previous years maybe lafayette is finally realizing the kids safety should always be first!

I do think that school should be more liberal with delays/closings. The first year that I taught, a student of mine was killed in a car accident caused by icy roads on a day we should have delayed.

C in T What I'M looking at is all the moisture this system has to work with! If we look to our south and west we will see that the storm is pulling moisture in to it! And is giving way to some heavy bands! We are still expecting the heavy heavy stuff by later on tonight! Now I like between 5" and 8" for Lafayette Meaning around 6 of 7 inches and closer to the 8" inches south of us!

If that is not what you was asking let me know!

Justin.

When the superintendent decides at 4 am that the roads are either safe or unsafe. He is doing it with say his 30 years expierence of driving he isnt thinking about the lets say 2000 students that have either just obtained there liscens or had it maybe a year. which puts the students at even more of a risk. no matter how much they are sure of their driving skills its different when there is ice under the snow.
Now I'm not one of those who's scare of driving in the snow infact i love it, i just don't do it because of those people who don't know how to handle there vehicle in this weather.
In this situation I don't worry about driving in it, I worry about who is driving in these conditions when i leave my house to go to work.
