Two Jet Streams Brawl & We Go Snowy and Stormy Next Week

Today will be a great day to stay in and do the honey-do list. Temperatures will be stuck in the teens and wind chills in the single digits and even near 5 below zero first thing this morning. This is ingredient number one needed for our first big snowstorm of the year. I like how the latest runs continue to play up the colder pattern rather than warmer and I think our chance for ice are much lower than before which keeps me in the heavier snow camp. Today I will painting, hanging out with the family, and when I am not painting looking at the latest model runs. Here are a couple maps to look at along with two main storm tracks I will be watching next week. Notice the two predominate storm tracks above. I like the one farther north because of the battle of jet streams you see below.

There is a southern bias on many of the models as expected and with the jet streams eventually merging together it will help to pull the moisture a good 150 to 200 miles farther north putting Lafayette in line for snow. I know there are a lot of snow mobilers ready to fire them up here at home instead of going to the Upper Peninsula. My kids are also ready for good sledding weather insteady of being iced in like we have been so often this winter.

Right now if I average out the 50 or so different storm tracks I have looked at we come out in the two to four inch range next week with the two systems but I am still leaning between 6 and 8 inches with a couple waves of moisture Tuesday and again Thursday. I will keep you updated. Now I had better get some paint and new paint brushes. I also have some chips and dip to watch some great basketball on WLFI today. Keep up the great job on the blogs. We live in Indiana and we know how things change every five minutes. Your observations are invaluable. The more data we all have and the more we all work together the more prepared we will be for whatever nature dishes out!

Happy blogging and thank you so much for keeping me going even at this late hour on Friday night. It is truly a reflection of how pumped up you make me after reading your comments and seeing how much interest there is out there when it comes to our weather. This after all is the weather hub of the country and we have high standards. You keep the bar high that is for sure!! A big thank you.

If you are from Tipton and Frankfort and you know who you are :) please share your comments. I expect to keep our lines of communication wide open this weekend and it is all possible with our blog. Justin, Teri, and Mary Anne I cannot wait to hear from you as always. Brow and Dena make sure to take a few weather pictures for us. I want to hear about and see the weather like never before with the best bloggers in the world! We will eventually extend this network to Australia. That is a story for another day.

Hey...mike...even with the southern bias, will we still be south of the main snowstorm?...or are we in Laf. looking to be the bullseye...In other words...where do you see the bullseye, as of now to be...and how much (range) snow there...

Mike Your words keep us pumped as well! Thank you!

I remember just starting out on this blog and now we are like a big family! ;)

Good work Mike!! I really hope that we get more than 2-4 inches of snow. I would love the 6-8. That would satisfy me for the winter if we don't get anymore. Thanks for always keeping us updated, my co-workers always come to me with their weather questions because they know that I check out wlfi.com at least 20 times a day. Thanks to you, I can always pass along your information!! Thanks.

I am staying away from the models for another day....they are too frustrating...right now. I have to put my trust into Mike right now.... To those of you who are not science majors...I am a science major, and have a huge interest in atmospheric science. It is easy to get frustrated by meteorologists who talk a lot about computer models. Most of the time....the models agree, or are close enough to blend them into a forecast. It's like a doctor relying on Xrays and lab tests....those models back up what the forecaster is thinking...This winter has once again been tough!

A forecaster has to have a gut, and that gut instinct will carry through tough times....Mike Prangley has a great gut instinct....and I trust him.

I am putting the prayer that I wrote for St. Jude on hold....waiting to see and hear what is ahead.

Gosh....now I am on a roll....don't worry, I will take my medicine tomorrow....and I will calm down.

We (north of I-74) will remain below freezing for all or most of the next 7 days....we have no ice threat, that I can see right now. Ice in Seymour, Madison, Maybe Bloomington..yes.

Good chilly morning!!! I am getting ready to venture outside.

I noticed this morning that a lake-effect band had set up, and it was east of South Bend reaching all the way to Ft. Wayne Indiana. It was interesting to see this, since it was not in my backyard.

I love a little snow....but live far enough up in rural Carroll Co, almost to White Co to want much more than that of an inch or two. As they don't keep these county roads much more than one lane. I have watched and check into you WLFI.com several times a day to see the weather. First time blogger. So, I am hoping we don't get 6-8 inches of snow and it goes elsewhere, but do not want anymore ice at all. Keep up the good work Mike. Everyone keep warm in this cold weather. I will watch to see what comes.

Bring on the 6-8 inches of snow! Ready to be snowed in for awhile.

I am ready for a big snow too. Would LOVE to get snowed in just once this year, but unfortunately it would take an awful lot to make it happen. I have a boss who drives about 45 miles to work and nothing stops her. I can hardly say I am snowed in when I am only about 6 miles from the office. Would if I could!!!

Morning all,

Did my runnig around already this morning, and yes is chilly, but the sun is shining, doesnt feel all that bad:) Temp where I am located is 11.3*

To anon,,I know what you mean by being snowed in. I also have a boss that drives many mile to get to work, when I only live about 10 miles for work.

My problem is, I shovel the snow from my walks and drive..Then the snow plow comes by and piles the snow at the end of my drive way . I cant get out!

One could be fined if walks are not shoveled, yet the street dept, un-does all of my hard work.

I hope if we do get a lot of snow that the street dept. will make sure that they dont plow people in their drives!

Wondering when the wind is to start???

Anonymous said...

Yes I agree that the thought of being snowed in sounded great but I too would have to go into work. I have had my boss come after me just to have enough people at the store. I work at our local grocery store and you know what happens when there is talk of a HUGE snow storm!

Wind is picking up here in Remington!

Anonymous said...

Wind is starting ever so slightly in Lafayette. 14F..

Anonymous said...

Wow....already around 0.7 moisture...And this is early...for those of you who remember the blizzard of 07, that storm had models around 6 days out forecasting around 5 inches....we got 17...who knows what could happen with this storm...

Anonymous said...

Just a ??? why are not other wx channels or sites showing snow for later in the week? Not one of them have forcasted more than a 20% chance of snow flurries! That is for the 5-10 day forcast!

Anonymous said...

Have you noticed the sun is getting warmer now! It feels great, even on a colder day. It is only going to get more intense from now on. Days will get longer. Its Great!

Anonymous said...

When is this storm suppose it hit? I have heard different days and I dont want to be stuck out in the country without the essentials.

Anonymous said...

I have also noticed the sun getting warmer each day. It was so nice and sunny this morning, but now, it is cloudy with lake effect snow showers. Oh well, hopefully it won't last long.

One South Bend station is still calling for a possible winter storm by the middle of next week. The other station has not mentioned it. I can't remember who on this blog asked if any other news media was forecasting a possible storm. Any way, this is what is happening up north.

Nothing is supposed to hit before Tuesday...tomorrow's snow will be fairly light and not much to get excited over...

To the anonymous who mentioned the blizzard, I will never forget that storm. It just was snowing for hours and hours and it was just amazing to watch (plus Purdue got 2 days off)! But yeah, I've been reading about this forecast and I'm psyched! I do hope we get the 6 to 8 they are talking about because besides the crazy ice storm, this has mostly been a dud of a winter!
Mike, keep up the great work - I've been a reader for a couple months now and love it - I'll be cheering hard for a big snow!

I hope that between all of the housework and basketball...Mike is able to check in with us over the weekend!!

Anonymous said...

You know what would be a huge bummer, it would be that we just get a weak little flurry maker or nothing at all. But, realize this wouldn't be the first time we get all excited about something and it totally goes the opposite..lol. Ah, you gotta love Indiana. Who knows..

By the way, Panama City Florida is a nice and toasty 71 out right now. Last night it only got down to 57. I could live with that .

Anonymous said...

oh ia to scared to get excited yet, dont forget guys remember some of the other storms this past year and last, they said we were gonna get and the track shifted. But oh wouldnt that be wonderfull.. finally maybe something to wish for.. ,aybe i will get to sleep thru the night, remember i deliver the jc, so am out at 2 in the morning doing my routes. oh by the way where do you go to see the paths of these storms you are talking about.. Teri, hope you are feeling better.. keep up the good work mike and justin, but please keep us posted...Becky from monticello

You seem so faithful to your job..I feel for you being out in all weather conditions!

I believe that some folks think that their news papers and mail are deliverd by magic! They need to learn not to gripe if all is late.

For people like you are their magic!

Thank you Teri, for the kind words. you know whats the most frustrating part of my route is ? it's usually the people who complain the most are the ones who A. dont clean off their walks, or steps of snow. and did not tip, at christmas. But the biggest reason i stay with it. it allows me to stay at home ( and not punnch a time clock ) and beable to babysitt my grandkids. I get the biggest thrill spending time with my grandson's , ages 1, 4, and 10. bye for now,, Becky

MANY PEOPLE ARE UNAWARE OF ...
`

S = Secure

**The main difference between http:// and https:// is It's all about keeping you secure*

HTTP stands for HyperText Transport Protocol, which is just a fancy way of saying it's a protocol (a language, in a manner of speaking) for information to be passed back and forth between web servers and clients.

The important thing is the letter S which makes the difference between HTTP and HTTPS.

The S (big surprise) stands for "Secure."

If you visit a website or webpage, and look at the address in the web browser, it will likely begin with the following: http://.

This means that the website is talking to your browser using the regular 'unsecure' language. In other words, it is possible for someone to "eavesdrop" on your computer's conversation with the website. If you fill out a form on the website, someone might see the information you send to that site.

This is why you never ever enter your credit card number in an http website!

But if the web address begins with https://, that basically means your computer is talking to the website in a secure code on which no one can eavesdrop.

You understand why this is so important, right?

If a website ever asks you to enter your credit card information, you should automatically look to see if the web address
begins with https://. If it doesn't, there's no way you're going to enter sensitive information like a credit card number.

PASS IT ON. You may save someone a lot of grief!

Mike's blog has the "s" other blogs don't...

and to you know who... was not the person who you may think posted this!
