Not A Pattern for Snow Couch Potatoes

Hey Mike,
Today me, Kenny and a couple of my friends, Jacob and Corey built a snow couch and enjoyed the outside weather we thought you might get a laugh out of it, and Jacob wanted to see if it could be used as one of your weather pictures on the news lol! Have a good one and stay warm.

I do not ever remember seeing a snow picture like this! I have seen dinosaurs sculpted in the snow but this one may take the prize. Wow. A big thanks to Kenny Max to getting our blog off on the right foot today. Now all they need is to hook-up the television outside and put on some layers and enjoy the Super Bowl on the snow couch. I do not think it would get any better. Now we cannot get lackadaisical in this pattern that is for sure. Today blowing and drifting snow will be a concern throughout the morning before it finally eases up this afternoon.

Make sure to also brace yourselves for steady temperatures in the teens today with wind chills near zero even at the noon hour. This is quite a pattern!

We may have one of the strongest storms in years to hit the United States. This storm is going to h
ave pressures down to 28.75" or as low as a category two hurricane! No, I really am serious. Since it is winter we can call it the snowcane. It will even have some tropical characteristics as it forms in the Gulf of Mexico. You can see what is causing this snowcane to develop below!

All three branches of the jet stream are coming together. The sub-tropical, polar, and arctic branches all phasing together is like adding high octane fuel to the atmosphere and this only happens once every few years. This is why some folks are comparing this to the big ones such as 2004, 1999, 1996, and the Super Storm of 1993. The potential is there as these 3 jet streams will carve out a full-latitude planetary trough. This storm will literally explode as it develops and I can see severe weather ripping portions of Florida before they change over to snow on the backside. Panama City, Florida could see white sandy and snowy beaches before all is said and done. Areas like Atlanta, Georgia could see several inches of record-breaking snow based on my latest track which is east of the Appalachian Mountains right along the Piedmont Plateau. It could be a historic blizzard for portions of the Appalachians eastern Ohio and Pennsylvania. The areas in the blue shading are considered my bulleye. Since we are so far out this will likely change but it is a good first call. Here is what I am seeing right now and why I think this is correct with the information and data I have looked at. Take a look at the European model below. This is the one I am going with and agree most with. Here is the set-up at 18,000 feet on Monday morning.

Notice the low forms in the northern Gulf of Mexico near Louisiana where you see the big circle. Here in Indiana during the Pre-Christmas storm that hit in 2004 the main low started farther west in Texas giving the Hoosier state a real chance of historic snow. This time around it is simply forming too far south and east because of a strong cold front that will move through the Hoosier state on Sunday. This dry, cold punch of air will push the thermal boundary these storms like to ride farther east and it verifies on this Tuesday morning European map.

I am starting to think even the big East Coast cities are not out of the woods and need to really watch this thing closely. All I have read all day is how they will have heavy rain. Well, I think even Washington, D.C. has a shot at an incredible snowstorm and Obama will get a real welcome to his new home from nature. He will no longer think the weather is wimpy along the East Coast that is for sure. The second thing I look at in this set-up is some agreement and we do have this agreement with another model that I do trust a little farther than I can throw it. Here is what the GFS model has:

The GFS has our storm even farther East!! Okay, now over the weekend we can compare any changes we see to this track and keep you updated on the blog. Right now Lafayette in this set-up will only see light snow from this monster storm along with most of Indiana. This answers the question about how much snow will we add to our snowy winter! Our seasonal totals have gone from 5 inches below average to 1.5 inches above average in less than three weeks.

In a typical winter here in Lafayette we average 22.4 inches of snow. We are quickly closing in on that number. My pre-winter snow forecast was between 25 and 30 inches of snow and I still see that coming true, although it will all add up differently than expected due to the huge turnaround we have seen this month.
This weekend I do not see us adding much to the snow totals above and I think we need to brace ourselves for the possibility of some icy weather developing as warm air rides in over our big snow pack. Models are showing about .10" of liquid precipitation this weekend and with our frozen ground and warm air riding in aloft it is the set-up for more slippery and dangerous roads. I do not see a big ice storm but one that tends to try to sneak up on travelers and I just will not let that happen to you this time around. Be on guard starting late tonight into Saturday morning and once again Sunday afternoon when a lot of folks will be traveling to Super Bowl parties. This is not a good mix. I will have more on this here on the blog including the Super Bowl forecast that I just want to show so I can warm you up. It does look like we are missing out on the big blizzard next week, but we will likely see its nasty backlash in the form of sub-zero temperatures by Wednesday not counting the wind chill. Have a great day and thank you bloggers for firing me up again late last night. You are worth missing out on a little sleep!

We also might as well have fun with this. I want Super Bowl predictions and scores and we will compare those with our WLFI staff. Remember I use a special weather formula to predict games and I will be tough to beat on this contest! lol :)

Good Morning!!! It must be blowing out in the country. Not only are schools on a two hour delay in your viewing area, but schools in Fulton, and most Marshall County schools, are on a two hour delay.

As I posted earlier, is there a chance of a warm-up the second week in Feb. ? A South Bend station is forecasting highs in the mid forties for the second week in February. Do I dare get my hopes up????

I went through the "BLIZZARD of 78" in Cleveland as a child, I remember not having any power for 2 weeks and my family having to go to a family friends home to stay where their was a total of 4 families living there temp. Wow !
the fun us kids had during that storm ! Memories, maybe I should pack up and head back to Cleveland to see this one. Question is will my job let me take a few weeks off if I get stranded there ? I could only wish. I will have family email me pics of the storm I guess ! sure wish it would come this way ! :(

William said...

Ahh yes blizzard of 78. we had snow tunnels from house to house in cinci. i have pics i will see if i can dig them out and sent them to mike. we actually were able to sled off the roof tops. When they actually got to us the city had dump trucks and earth movers to take the snow away. Back in 86?? i think was the big one i remember here where 421 south of delphi was blown shut by the snow and plows could not make it through.

I wish I could get a hold of some pics from that blizzrd ! All of my families pics were destroyed !
But, the memories still last a lifetime !!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A storm of unprecedented magnitude....that's what the National Weather Service terms the blizzard which whipped Ohio last month. What occurred on January 26th, 1978 in Ohio was not a blizzard. What did occur was even rarer and even more dangerous: a severe blizzard....the worst of winter storms.

The National Weather Service defines a "severe blizzard" as a storm with winds of 45 miles per hour or greater; a great density of falling or blowing snow; and temperatures of 10 degrees or less.

In fact, winds gusted to more than 100 miles per hour over much of the state, with sustained winds in the 45-60 mph range. Record snowfalls were recorded in many areas....and all-time low barometric pressure records were shattered as the intense storm whipped the state.

With the assistance of Ed Degan....a meteorologist at the Akron-Canton Airport's Weather Service Office, UPI has summarized the development of that storm-of-storms:

On January 24th, two seemingly unrelated low pressure areas, one in the western Gulf of Mexico and the other in northern North Dakota, began to develop.

The North Dakota low was expected to pass north of Ohio, posing no great weather threat to the state. The gulf low was forecast to move gradually northeastward toward Ohio. Rain was expected to develop over the state, changing to snow, as colder air moved in behind the storm system.

On Wednesday, January 25th, all the weather patterns seemed to be occurring as forecast. The Gulf low moved into northern Louisiana during the morning, the other system was moving to the east.

Then the first signs of something ominous began to appear.

The North Dakota low began tracking more to the southeast and atmospheric pressure, north of the Gulf low, began to fall rapidly.

It became apparent to meteorologists that the two low pressure systems were on a collision course....and that collision would occur over, or very near, the state of Ohio.

At 4:30 p.m., the Weather Service issued heavy snow warnings for northwestern Ohio and a winter storm warning for the remainder of the state.

By early Wednesday evening, the low from North Dakota was tracking directly toward Ohio. It then became obvious that a very dangerous weather situation faced Ohioans.

Forecasters issued blizzard warnings for the entire state at 9 p.m., January 25th.

The weather conditions at this time, however, were misleading....and those conditions are blamed for many being surprised by the storm.

Rain had spread over Ohio and temperatures were in the 40s across most of the state. The wind increased slightly as midnight approached, but conditions were more typical of an early spring rain storm, than those preceding a disaster.

Midnight passed, however, and wind speeds continued to increase.

It swiftly became evident that a storm of unprecedented magnitude was imminent.

But then the two storms met and did something that even the meteorologists....who had expected a blizzard....did not foresee. The two low pressure centers twisted together....a very rare and dangerous occurrence. Warm air began to flow into Ohio from the north and colder air into the state from the south.

The rain abruptly changed to snow, spreading northeastward and gaining in intensity.

Wind speeds, by that time, had reached the 70 mile per hour range and gusts of more than 100 miles per hour downed power lines, billboards, mobile homes, and tree limbs.

And then the snow....caught by the strong winds....began to form deep, deep drifts.

An entire semi-trailer truck was buried in one snow bank near Mansfield. The driver was not rescued until nearly a week later.

Hundreds upon hundreds of motorists were stranded in their cars along nearly every highway in the state. The Ohio Turnpike, for the first time in history, was completely shut down. Interstate highways were, for the most part, impassable. Smaller roadways in nearly every county were invisible beneath the snow.

Visibility was often reported at zero.

Electric service to thousands of homes across the state was disrupted. Many persons were forced to leave their frigid homes.

Suffering, discomfort, and danger were, by then, commonplace. Deaths occurred.

Officials urged all Ohioans to remain at home as temperatures dropped to near zero. Wind chill factors across the state plummeted to near 60 degrees below zero.

In all, 35 persons died during that storm. Officials, even today, say some bodies still may be buried in unmelted snow drifts.

The Blizzard of 1978 was, in fact, the worst storm to ever occur in Ohio.

Hi all,
I am home from work today due to the creeping crud, or URI..I seem to catch about everything that is going around.. I have almost lost my voice. My famliy doesn't seem to mind that fact one bit:)

I did have to venture out to take my daughter to school, roads in spots are very slick..

My guardian angel was looing over me this morning. My daughter had just gotten of the car in the parking lot at her school, I was driving very slow, which all should do in a school zone anyway, when a gal in a van, came zooming around a corner, too wide of a turn and was in my lane..My quick reaction was not to hit the breaks yet swerve, and I did get stuck in a big pile of snow!

She hit her breaks hard and slid side ways..close to a head on...

That was a student driving..late for school, and was not paying attention to traffic nor the speed limit...

A good example as to why some kids should not be driving in this kind of weather..her guardian angel was watching over her as well..

I am still a little shaken.

Be safe all!

Teri

Teri:

I can only imagine how shaken you are. Thanks goodness all ended well without injuries and etc.

My Cass County school closed today. I was just leaving Rochester when I heard it announced on the radio. I am always relieved when I do not have to make the 25 mile drive in horrible drivin conditions.

WOW ! William thanks for all the details of the " Severe Blizzard of 78" I was only 12 years old at the time and only remember Mom and Dad getting us " 9 kids mind you" out of the house and to a friends house that had plenty of heating sources other than electric. As a child you remember the fun it was but as an adult I could not even begin to imagine what was truly going through my parents minds TO HAVE TO PACK UP 9 KIDS AND TAKE THEM ALL AWAY FROM HOME, I remember wearing the same clothes for days on end and bathing by boiling water by a fire place !
And to note that my father at the time was a long distance truck driver, and I am so thankful he was off the road at the time !
Thanks again WILLIAM for all the details !

Snowing a little here in Logan. The ground is covered again from where i shoveled. Looks possibly like maybe a half inch of snow or more. The schools here are closed.

Was reading the NWS Discussion today, they still have doubts on the model runs for next weeks storm and think there is a possibility that at least eastern indiana could get something from it.

My Superbowl prediction is the Cardinals over Steelers 24-20. More of a heart pick then a brain pick though. Hate the steelers and want to see Edge win a superbowl.

Anonymous said...

F/C, I am sure you are relieved for not having to make that 25 mile drive.

One of my co-workers lives in Delphi, she does not mind driving in this weather, however she is from WI and is used to much worse..

I keep telling her, she may know how to drive in this stuff, but many Hoosier's do not!

And I hope that the student driver learned a lesson, and she will be safe on her drive home!

And remember during the blizzard of78, cell phones were not in.and no computers.only LAN lines, many lost communication and power because of down lines. We had our phone hanging on the kitchen wall the old dial kind.We Could not reach the outside world, we were snowed in. Could not get our doors open..I was 19 years old...

Anonymous said...

Teri:

You are so correct about Hoosier drivers. Most of the time, I probably drive too slow when the road conditions are not good. Even though I have a four wheel drive truck, I just take it slow. It amazes me, the number of people who think "slowing down" means driving 45-50 mph instead of 60-65 mph.

Rochester only had a few flakes this morning. It looks as if the clipper seperated and went to the norht and south. The sun is shining at this time!!!

It looked like someone scrambled a snow globe this morning. We probably got an additional inch of snow. They flakes were HUGE! It is really fluffy! Twin Lakes is still open and bus driver said....roads were terrible when she picked up my daughter which was the first on....no snow plows on the road to the north of us. Yikes. Brother drives to work in Winamac and he said they roads were terrible on his way up from Northern Carroll Co. Sun is shining now :) It was so pretty with the snow coming down this morning. My new black lab pup was tunneling thru a drift and came out lookin like a big snowball, which I had my camera with me. Oh wow...that isn't good when lifeline flies over! Yikes! :(

OMG you ok?? What if a child had been on the sidewalk..Or like you said YOUR child. Just a hunch but was a cell phone involved with the other driver? I too have a big truck and it amazes me how many kids or just cars period pass me for going slow when I should be because of the road conditions.

Anonymous said...

Teri....had the same thing happen, but was a parent ripping a kid in the back seat while on the cell phone. Kids were walking across and she did get stopped, but wow....I held my breath....Glad you weren't hurt nor anybody else...See them driving and passing like nobodies business and then had one pass me on hwy 24 and two miles down the road was sitting next to a electrical pole...didn't hit it....but the group of kids were out crying, cause it scared the stuffings out of them. Police were coming from other direction and saw them passing slowed up and the kids messed up and over corrected and went in....excess speed of 50....driving little car low to the ground.....Wow is all I can say....

Anonymous said...

Thanks all, no the student was not on a cell phone, she was just in hurry and was oblivious to the surroundings, I saw her face, eyes focused straight ahead. See didnt even see me as she turned the corner.. And yes William, The same thoughts went through my mind, what if a student or and an adult were crossing that path on foot...

I am fine, the student did not stop, If I would have not have been under the weather so to speak. She would have gotten an earful from me! But I have no voice:)

People like to pick on todays weather people about bad calls. They always refer to the old weather guys doing it right. Well as you can see the storm of 78 no one knew it was comming. At least today we know something is comming. I still think back to those days. Snow was snow and more snow. We made forts across the street from each other and made cannons and slings to send snow balls back and forth. I feel like a kid again just thinking about it.

Anonymous said...

Well William go out and have fun! :-)

I have looked at some maps of 78 and if they had the weather stuff we have now they would have had a good idea as to what was coming!

I mean we look at the weather maps for this system in the making for Monday and Tuesday and We see this strong low with gusty winds and heavy snowfall all to come.

We really have come a long way yet there is still a lot we don't know about weather and Tornados are one of those things we don't fully understand. But I think we do pretty good for what we got!

I remember the blizzaed of 78 and will never forget how the wind made such a howling noise. My parents wouldnt even let us look out the door to see the weather. I remember having 4-5ft drifts in town. I also remember 25 outside of Odell was plowed to one lane. They had to have pave loaders to open the hwy. I also remember them say drifts were well above 20ft out in the country. I cant remember how much snow we got but I do remember buying my very fist pair of one piece coveralls (Green) with the money that we made shovelling snow ( I was so proud of what I accomplished with that extra money). What an experiance for a kid but a nightmare for an adult.

Mike,

When you get a moment, give us an update.

Currently it looks like the big system everybody is talking about will keep moving to the east coast. I don't think we will be seeing much of it!

However we could see a few more snow flurries to snow showers as we could see another small Alberta clipper move in by Tuesday!

So for now that would be the next system!

But the big one I think we wil miss out on!

Justin.

While some areas likely ducked what had looked to be a serious snow storm, a weather maker tracking from the Gulf of Mexico to Atlantic Canada during the first half of the week will have impact over the eastern United States.

For one thing, it will threaten central and south Florida with a few severe, damaging thunderstorms

Then there will be its snow potential, which will stretch northeast from the southern Appalachians to the heart of the mid-Atlantic I-95 corridor along with New England. How much snow will fall over the big cities is as yet to be determined and may well hinge upon how far offshore the storm tracks on its way to Nova Scotia.

As the storm aims for Canada, cold air will spill through the Midwest and into the South, where a few snow showers could fly over Atlanta and Birmingham on Tuesday.

All should go out and play today, the temp is 36* Great snowman weather. a bit windy though..We will not get a blizzard,,maybe a little an inch or dusting of snow and colder temps return..so enjoy the weekend!
