Snow Picking up in Intensity, Travel not Advised

Looking at the latest satellite and radar composites, weather watcher and blogger snowfall, liquid to snow equivalents, and the latest model data it still looks like we are on track for 4 to 8 inches of snowfall across our area. You see some of the hometown forecasts above showing the total forecast snowfall between now and Wednesday afternoon. Here are the snowfall totals so far below as of 7 p.m. Remember the storm is still forming down in Arkansas.

I really appreciate all of your snowfall totals and I have been also sharing these with the National Weather Service offices to help them as well since they are still on the fence whether to issue a winter storm warning for our area. The 2 p.m. run of models seemed to have a bit of trouble handling the amount of moisture riding to the north so they were forced once again into a wait and see approach. But if you are seeing what I am on the latest radar trends I think we can all agree that a better safe than sorry approach works here and with all the travelers between here and Indianapolis I think a winter storm warning is warranted especially with a good portion of our area expecting an upwards of 6 inches of snow and more. Precisioncast 18 verifies this nicely below with those heavy blue bands having no trouble moving in here by 11 p.m.

The Weather Service offices will take another look at this during the evening ahead of our heaviest snow which will move in between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. The newest data I plugged into our WLFI SUPER SNOW MODEL is showing an additonal 4 to 6 inches of snow in our area in addition to what we have already received which easily meets warning criteria. Whatever happens we all know to take this Super Bowl storm seriously and the guys at the Weather Service who do a great job want to make sure you take it seriously no matter if they upgrade or not, especially with all of the accidents taking place out there. I am going to go post an updated storm web video on wlfi.com and will check back with you in a bit. Remember to send in some pictures and keep those snow totals coming because they do make a huge difference.

Mike or Justin... I have been watching radars all day from indiana to texas... i have noticed in the last hour that the southern part of the system in texas, is now pushing more southerly.. if this continues will it affect our snow totals in indiana? or did you already anticipate that section of the system to swing southerly.... Thanks.

I just heard a snowmobile in northern jasper co hit some trees. be carefull. Also as I look at the interstate the trafic has slowed way down.

Anonymous said...

Well mike looks like Attica schools are listening to you. They put up a 2hr delay

Anonymous said...

We are currently watching all the dark blue heavy bands that are still working there way to us from MO, and IL, I do feel we will see these bands and that will give us a good amount. I still feel we will hit between or mark of 5" to 8" inches!

I still will not count it out.

And mike thank you as well for all your updates!

Thanks for doing your blog. When I want to know what's really going on I know where to go. I live in the Southern part of Fountain County. Since we're out here in the middle of nowhere I look at several places for my weather.(Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Lafayette, and Crawfordsville) I can honestly say I get the most information from your blog. I've been known to read it in the middle of the night too! Thanks again.

Thanks William!

This map makes me jump for joy. look at the moisture. woo hoo. thanks to Mike for getting us geared up for this.

not complaining, but I guess I don't understand what the issue is of not upgrading our advisory. How many times have we seen WSW posted only to be scaled back later....think many people and schools traveling tonight to events will and have underestimated the conditions because of the "only advisory" attitude....just my take.....

William, I agree about the other people being asleep. Nice to get check in and not read though the put downs.

Im gonna guess we are close to an inch in Logansport. Still snowing now. It is a very fine light snow however. The one a couple weeks ago seemed to fluff up a lot more then this one has done.

Hey, Mike - I'm a long-time viewer of your blog, but this is my first time commenting.

I live in Linden - I just went outside at 9 p.m. and we have about 1.7 inches of snow here!

Keep up the good work!

"What do you guys think about travel tomorrow? I'm going to be coming up 65 from Lebanon and it isn't looking so great."

Unfortunately I don't think it looks good at all.

Hey mike. Snow got started late out here in Benton but catching up. Just drove home from Klondike. You have more snow but the wind is blowing harder (go figure) out here. East/West roads are starting to finger drift in places. I'm guessing we are about half an inch behind the Laf/W.Laf area.

Here is a link to help with the roads I do thing blowing and drifting snow will be a must watch!!!!! If you are going in the morning then there is a good chance it will still be snowing and with it blowing visibility will be lower the normal.
