Indiana in the Eye of the Tiger for Another Week

It turned into a beautiful day yesterday in Lafayette with only light breezes waving the red, white, and blue. Today's main weather worry will be stronger southwest breezes between 10 and 20 mph that will cause some blowing and drifting snow. A light dusting of snow could also cause slick spots around the area by late today and tonight. Thank you John Allen for this invigorating picture.

What started out as a tame winter ha
s certainly changed. Indianapolis just had their 6th biggest snowstorm on record with 12.5" of snow. This was only 3 inches less than the blizzard of1978 . It tells you want kind of pattern we were in. Of course we did not have all the wind and the snow and the Lafayette was let off very lucky. That foot of snow could easily have been us. Portions of the Arkansas had 3 inches of ice which would have been a little more than we saw here in Lafayette since the great ice storm of 1991 when we had chunks of ice the size of cars falling off our WLFI television tower. You see Old glory above with its rich history and that includes wild weather. At one time yesterday 70% of the mainland USA had weather watches or warnings and MILLIONS were without power. Our Super Bowl storm will go down as one of the most devastating storms to hit our country since the Super Storm of 1993. That is the storm I will always remember that brought snow flurries to my home in Jacksonville, Florida preceded by hurricane force wind gusts of 76 mph.

Mary Best was kind enough to forward this picture to us on behalf of G. Schubert. Check out this story below and how we can count our blessings here at home.

Well, the final total in the Carbondale area is 4" of sleet (I've never seen that much sleet!), followed by 1/2" of freezing rain, and topped off with 4" of snow. What a sandwich! There are about 13,000 households without power in So. Illinois, most are father south of me. Not as bad at Kentucky though. Needless to say, I did not get to work today. I could get out of my driveway, but not up the lane. I have attached a picture of my stuck Jeep(storm chase vehicle), my snow covered lane, and my deck. I got the deck cleared off enough to get to the hot tub, which I will need after a long day of shoveling.

The amazing part is that we are not even close to the end game yet in this stormy pattern. I have chances of rain, snow, sleet, freezing rain, and even more accumulating snow in the forecast for six of the next seven days. Yes, we are in the eye of the tiger as nature roars our way with not one but two potent jet streams across our great land.

We have the BAJA EXPRESS coming from the Pacific Ocean and this is meeting the POLAR EXPRESS or the nickname given for the Polar jet stream and subtropical jet streams. The subtropical jet was nearly non-existent for most of the first part of our winter and it is the reason we have tripled our seasonal snowfall so far in January. We have already had 11.1 inches of snow this month which is already about 4 inches above average and counting. Here are the official totals from our storm and you all were terrific about sending in pictures and numbers. You made a difference, a real difference before, during, and after the storm and as I told Chris McNew of Tipton, I think we all need to start our own weather channel and take it national. I would take all of you with me, well almost all of you if you know what I mean. :) Okay, drum roll please! Here were the totals from our biggest snowstorm since February 1st!!

We had that big range in snowfall we talked about. I did want to point out a surprise though and that was Peru in Miami County that had 6 inches of snow. Nature always amazes me! Here is what it looked like out there. John Allen snapped another great picture of his daughter that experienced snow and sledding for the first time. She certainly looks like she loves the snow and I think she may be a future meteorologist. I used to smile like that out in the snow when I was that young.

The Allen family just moved here from Texas. Welcome to Indiana and enjoy our beautiful state. We also have what we call Hoosier hospitality to go along with the great weather. This came about because of all the storms that we make it through year in and year out and helping your neighbor and caring about others is instilled in the way people go about their lives here. It is the Indiana version of southern hospitality which I think you will really enjoy! It more than makes up for all of our bizarre weather and tornadoes. :) The kids were not the only ones having fun in the snow today. How about them dogs. Justin New sent in a picture of Pickles who could not get enough of the snow.

This is on average our snowiest week of the year so we are calling it the dog days of winter in honor of pickles and the other dogs that love to get out and play in the snow. Nature is on cue and we are not done yet with plenty of bark and bite in your forecast. Get out there and make sure those sidewalks are cleared and your areas around the mailbox cleared for the mailman. Also take breaks if you are shoveling snow because only 20 minutes of shoveling 5 inches of snow is like running a 5k or 3.1 miles. I took a break yesterday and will probably feel it tomorrow. Be smart and take care of yourself. Shovel now before it is too late! I am tracking a little bit of everything and will have more answers on nature's big dogs on our doorstep in the forecast coming up. Thanks again for the pictures. I will try to get a little sleep. LOL

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!! Be careful what you wish for!!!!!

The snow was a blast to ride the cyclocross bike in yesterday- provided super hard resistance and that kept me pretty warm (plus people looked at me like I was crazy). But it would be nice to get some long rides outside in before racing starts (Feb 28)...any idea if things are going to start improving?

We finally got dug out yesterday morning, love neighbors that plow your drive and you offer to pay and they say that is what neighbors are for. We had already gone to our elderly neighbors and shoveled her drive and deck and stoop and she is like why are you doing this and my 12old said well that is what neighbors are for and when we got back to our home...3/4ths of a mile from her someone had came thru and plowed our drive out. It was awesome! I caught them before they left and asked to pay them and no, wouldn't see of it. They kids 12 and 4 had so much fun in the snow and so did our new black lab puppy that everyone came in by the fire and relaxed and warmed up! It was a good day. I am thankful we didn't get the ice. Thanks Mike and all who so watched all this crazy weather and kept us on top of the game. I love this site and the people are so nice, I will come back and keep up on it all. Whoever wanted to go snowmobiling, I sure hope you enjoyed it and was safe and got to shut the engine off and enjoy the peace out there.

??? Tippecanoe is still under a Level 3 advisory , but no delays for TSC ? I am so confused whay there are no delays but yet an advisory is still in place ! Can anyone help me understand some thinking around here?
Mike, I have been watching this system come together and kept my faith in you ther whole way through. Could you possibly be available for a PT position at TSC
for our transportation department?
Maybe you would give these kids a 2hour delay if the roads are still under an advisory ?!
We really need you here in the Lafayette area that's for sure !
Thanks Mike !!! :)

Nice pictures and Pickles is soo cute, be carful this morning, roads are still slick

They've had plenty of time off this year. Get to school kids! Lafayette Schools went yesterday so count your blessings.

Anonymous said...

Lafayette Schools are also on City Streets, alot of these kids in Tippecanoe Schools are on very rural roads. My goodness the snow plows just went down the road here at 7:15 AM, this morning, HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS GET ON THE BUS AROUND 6:15 ! I don't think the kis need to stay home but, there should have been a 2 hour delay if ALL the roads are not cleared yet and my wasn't until 7:15 this morning !
SAFETY first for my children !
Sorry !!!

What does a snowplow look like?
We live in rural Carroll County & still haven't seen a plow since Monday morning(when they weren't needed).

Be Carefull I65 @ 193 jacknifed semi probably lane blockage and I65 @ 201 pickup pulling a camper jacknifed and slid into the ditch. The winds are really blowing up here. Small drifts are forming. County roads have been plowed but with the snow blowing across them they are slick.

William said...

Most of the snow that was in my yard has now drifted around the trees and anything else not moving. Not huge drifts but this one in the driveway is 12" deep.

I guess I will finally have to get the plow out for the first time this year. Yes Yes. This has got to be the longest I have had to wait to use the plow. I wonder if the ole girl will start?

Have fun and be safe out there yall.

Yay! Bring us another big snow! :)

Anonymous said...

Justin- Your dog is sooooo cute. I have a pug who wont even go off the porch in the snow. He is a big baby. Hoping he gets off my bed soon and actually decides to go off the porch.

Anonymous said...

We made it to school on a delay....winds are blowing, and the roads are drifting....so be careful driving!!

Next big system looks like a Mon/Tues event....and if you want big snow...you want this low to track NE on the WESTERN side of the Appl Mts.

The storm is forecast to emerge from the Gulf of Mexico on Monday, then race into the Northeast by Tuesday. The exact track of the storm will determine which areas receive substantial snow, ice or heavy rain. There are currently three possible tracks that AccuWeather.com meteorologists are monitoring.

A track along or just west of the Appalachian Mountains would lead to heavy snow for the Ohio Valley and eastern Great Lakes, both of which were hit hard by the recent winter storm. Rain would not only soak the Eastern Seaboard, but could also cause flooding problems.

Anonymous said...

Regardless of the track, the storm will be fueled by two distinctly different air masses. A surge of warmth will precede the storm, while harsh cold and blustery winds will blast southward in its wakeThe strong winds following the storm would severely blow and drift the storm's snow. Dangerous blizzard conditions could cripple the eastern Great Lakes or a portion of the Northeast on Tuesday as the storm strengthens.
Looks like we will miss out if it goes this way
Mike whats your imput?

I dont know if anyone would know but my family and I have to go from Laf. to Indy on sat. Do you think the roads will be ok then. We r taking 65

The Polar Bear plunge should be this weekend. Mike are you jumping in this year?

To answer the blog question. There were some not so nice blogs posted so the moderator was turned on. When that happens Mike has to allow any new posts to be displayed on the blog. He was allowing them through as he got a chance. Not that anything was probably wrong with what you said. I had a few not show up as well.

Thanks everybody for the nice words about Pickles!

I think we are all watching the possible storm next week! When there is a chance for the galf moisture to push into our area it needs to be watched! TIme will tell!

I knoe I'M also going to be watching Superbowl Sunday for that possible system! However if we do get something on Sunday I will have to find a way to do both! lol.......... And I will! :D

Have a good day Bloggers And Mike!

I think I got enough sleep last night and I feel much better!

This will be a textbook case of a storm coming out of the Gulf of Mexico then turning up the East Coast. This is the type of thing we meteorologists salivate over, yet rarely see.

The storm will get started on Sunday as powerful jet stream winds plunge into the Deep South. Clouds will quickly expand through the western Gulf Sunday, and rain will break out by afternoon. The precipitation area will grow rapidly later in the day and at night.

The northern side of the growing storm will be snow. Sunday night, expect accumulating snow to spread from Arkansas into western Tennessee and western Kentucky.

The storm will not get to its worst stages until Monday and Tuesday when it makes the turn up the Eastern Seaboard. Somewhere west of Interstate 81, there will be a big dump of snow from this thing, perhaps more than a foot.

My apologies to all you snow lovers along the I-95 corridor. For you, this storm will bring wind and rain.

Story by AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist John Kocet.

Anonymous said...

Big winter storms thrive off temperature extremes, and the East Coast is a perfect place for that. When the jet stream plunges southward through the Central states and turns up the East Coast, warm Gulf Stream air is brought into close proximity with cold air through the interior. The result is often explosive storm development on the coast.

This storm is expected to track just inland from Charlotte to Richmond and then right across the Delmarva Peninsula to southern New Jersey. This will spare the big Eastern cities a major snowfall. Through the interior however, a heavy to perhaps crippling snowfall is possible. Ohio, West Virginia, western Pennsylvania and western New York could get the worst of the snowstorm with accumulations of 12 inches or more.

Wednesday, we discussed at length at how this storm might occur, and now it appears to be a certainty. Coming at the beginning of a new week, this storm is going to be a big disruptive force. Make sure to get all the details of the storm right here on AccuWeather.com.

I'm excited about it! Can you tell?

Story by AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist John Kocet.

Do you think this includes us Chris or Justin?

I think the road crews have done an outstanding job. People have to realize that Tippecanoe and the surrounding counties only have so many plows and salt. Why not buy more you say? Well, Indiana did not budget for more. Can't blame the counties. Plus, the cost of salt has went up 225% from a year ago. These men and women plowing roads on shifts that last 18 hours should be commended. They are doing all they can.

Anonymous said...

Blowing snow huge problem in Tippecanoe County and TSC school bus got stuck of 150E (I believe) just north of 800S...PLEASE BE CAREFUL...there are way too many slide offs and unexpected snow drifts.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like the trends of this next big possible system for Mon-Tues has been Westward. If that happens, we could see another big snow.

Anonymous said...

OH god no more this snow was enough. =)

Anonymous said...

You can never have enough snow! Bring it on!

Anonymous said...

Well from the way things look right now it does seem to be a strong Low with a chance of snow for us.

If this Low tracks more to the north and west then what some of the models show currently then I would say we have another chance for a nice snow. Still it is a ways out to really go with the models but like I said before when we have a good chance to work with the golf moisture this time of year then it needs to be watched. And with a low like this one high winds could even be a factor as well.

Right now I still want to keep watching Sunday where we have that slight chance for a rain to snow system. It is not a big one which is good but for now with the way things have been we should take it one system at a time!

And we should not stop watching this possible system around Monday by any means! For it does have the
potential to be a BIG system rather for us or not! For now Snow is likely for us in Indiana on that day. Ideas on amounts will come a little later on as we get closer and things become more clear as to what we can really expect!

I will be watching it like a hawk and we all will take it day by day.

Tomorrow I will have a better idea yet and will be able to give a little more info. SO currently nothing is set in stone things can and will change in this time and watching it closely is the thing to do..........

But in a nutshell this system for around Monday does have the potential to come more north and give way to snow!

I hope not, we will have major flooding! I pray we don't get rain.

To the person that said they live in Carroll Co, We got plowed out first thing in the morning before 10A, right after the snow and they put sand down. I was highly impressed. But I understand what you are saying, when the ice came around Christmas time we could get out or people in as they had no sand at that time. It was a mess, but this is a new, year. So, hats off to my snow plow driver.

I had to stop in one of the schools today (TSC) and the parents were calling in constantly to voice their disgust with the lack of the 2hr. delay. What do you bet ther will be a delay tomorrow????? The southern county roads are drifting too quickly to keep up with.

SR 16 had drifting snow and SR 25 through northern Cass and southern Fulton County had blowing/drifting snow. I can only imagine what some of the county road are like. It is quite windy!!!

A South Bend station advised there is a possibility of a warm-up the second week of Feb. Actually, the temps would just be getting back to normal and may be a little above normal.

In NJ everyone puts up snow fencing next to the roads on farmland, I think it is a requirement there, it really cuts down on the drifting snow. Why don't they do that here? NJ gets more snow than IN.

Anonymous said...

Just as you stated NJ gets snow MORE than Indiana, that is the reason for no snow fencing...
