How About that Sunshine! Lafayette Breaks Freezing for 1st Time in 7 Days!

All streaks must come to an end and in this case Lafayette's frozen tundra streak of 7 days at 32 degrees or below is over. You can thank all of that sunshine and just think if we did not have that snow pack out there we would have been pushing 50 in some areas. But that is okay our high of 35 feels more like 50 in that warmer sunshine. If you notice we have a higher sun angle out there to work with so if you are walking the dog or taking a nice walk the middle 30s this time of year does not feel nearly as cold as it did back in early January. I am going to walk the dog and check back with you.

An update on tonight and Sunday....it looks like it will turn breezy and that will keep the patchy fog and freezing drizzle away and it looks like good travel weather for Super Bowl Sunday. We will still have to be ready for a few areas of blowing and drifting snow as the wind picks up tonight and tomorrow. The north-south roads will be impacted most. The good news is the warmer temperatures and sunshine did help put at least a crust on the snow. So I do not anticipate roads to be nearly as bad as what we saw on Thursday and Friday. I still have to give you my pick so stay tuned. Will the Cardinals shock the world? Nobody picked the Cardinals this year so it would be earth-shaking and in this year of the earthquake for Lafayette it may have been a sign.

Strong, sustained winds are causing significant blowing and drifting of snow, especially on rural roads.

The roads most impacted are those running east-to-west, said Mark Kirby, director of Tippecanoe County Emergency Management. Some stretches of county roads are being reported as totally covered by blowing snow.

Kirby said county highway trucks will be out this evening to hit some of the area's trouble spots.

The Level 3 advisory is the least restrictive level and only warns the public to be careful of potentially dangerous conditions. The travel advisory status will be reevaluated on a daily basis.

I previously sent some to Mike last week but the weather kind of interupted possible blog pics. He will have more Monday when he goes to work.

Richard: Your pictures must be terrific!!!!

I traveled from Rochester to New Buffalo, MI. Then I came home and went to Royal Center in Cass County. I had no trouble with blowing/drifting roads until I came to SR 16 in Cass County. It was horrible. At least the sun was shining.

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - Montgomery County Commissioners have issued a travel advisory. They are asking residents to stay off the roadways Saturday evening.

Tippecanoe County is under a Level 3 Travel Advisory. Emergency Management Director Mark Kirby says strong sustained winds are causing significant blowing and drifting of the existing snow. He said it is causing problems in the rural parts of the community. Kirby says the conditions on the roadways are expected to get worse as the temperature drops. Indiana State Police say many accidents have occured on State Road 28. Police urge drivers to use caution on the icy roadways.

Mike or other bloggers can you give an explanation of what changed in the weather system to take out the storm and bring us warmer than predicted temperatures this week. I am mainly curious and not pressing any negative views here. Since we were talking about a perfect storm coming together what happened to stop it? Just wanting some insight to the change so we can increase our meteorological knowledge.

Mike, We appreciate your spirit and teaching us about these things. Hope you enjoy your Super Bowl weekend and can get to this after you come back to work on Monday.Go Cardinals (gotta root for the Edge)

THIS IS WORTH READING. NOT TO PUT A DAMPER ON AL THE GREAT FUN OF THE GAME..JUST FOR SOME WHO DO NOT KNOW:

Super Bowl ads reflect tough times in US

WASHINGTON (AFP) — On Sunday when Americans settle down in front of their televisions to watch American football's Super Bowl, many will be hoping to put their worries about the fumbling US economy on hold.

But it's going to be hard.

The reminders are everywhere, including on the screen in the form of the Super Bowl ads, which rival the game for entertainment value.

Although companies have stumped up a record three million dollars for 30-second Super Bowl ad slots, the ads reflect the woes of the US economy.

Gone are American car manufacturers like General Motors, Ford and Chrysler; in are Japanese and German cars, like Honda, Toyota and Audi.

Federal Express will not be running an ad this year, and have said "specifically that it's an economic issue," said David Shoffner, a spokesman for Pavone, the advertising company that since 2004 has hosted the Spotbowl.com website on which Super Bowl-watchers can vote for their favorite ad.

Cost-cutting measures, including a 20 percent salary cut for Federal Express chief executive officer Frederick Smith and a hiring freeze, have been put into effect at the shipping company which is struggling with what Smith has called "some of the worst economic conditions in our 35-year operating history."

Taking out a three-million-dollar ad would not have sat well with those measures, even if the commercials reach a huge audience.

"The way a lot of companies justify paying three-million dollars for an ad is by saying -- look at the numbers. The viewership of the game compared to the investment is relatively low compared to other advertising opportunities," said Shoffner.

"Take the Oscars: you pay less for the Oscars but you're actually paying more per viewer than during the Super Bowl," he said.

A 30-second television ad in the Academy Awards in 2007 cost 1.67 million dollars -- about one-third less than the same spot in the Superbowl. Forty million people watched the Oscars that year, less than half the 90-million-plus who watched the Super Bowl.

Last year, a record 97.5 million people in the United States switched on their tellies on Super Bowl Sunday last year to watch the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots.

It was the third year in a row that the game's US TV audience exceeded 90 million viewers.

Around the world, an estimated one billion people watched last year's championship game, according to the National Football League (NFL).

Half of those who watch the Super Bowl in the United States tune in specifically for the adverts, according to a report in Advertising Age in 2005.

Nearly six in 10 Super Bowl viewers say they talk about the ads at work the day after the game, while fewer than half talk about the game, a survey published in Advertising Age showed.

"Even in 2009, facing the worst economic mess in almost 80 years and at a cost of 100,000 dollars per second for commercial time, the Super Bowl is proving to be attractive to advertisers for two simple reasons," John Lord, a professor of marketing at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, said.

"The game still delivers the biggest audience any advertiser can reach in one fell swoop and the association with America's biggest sporting event puts your brand or company in a positive context," he said.

That could be one reason why Cash4Gold, which buys jewelry from Americans who are strapped for dollars and then melts down the precious metal and sells it on, has taken out an ad in this year's Super Bowl.

Cash4Gold's Super Bowl debut ad features two well known Americans -- Ed McMahon, who for years was the sidekick to the popular late-night talk show host Johnnie Carson, and MC Hammer, the musician behind "U Can't touch this" and other hits -- who have fallen on hard times.

McMahon faced foreclosure on his California house last year and Hammer filed for bankruptcy in 1996.

Cash4Gold's business doubled last year compared with the previous year as Americans sold off the family jewels to try to stave off financial ruin.

"The Cash4Gold ad is a sign of the times," said Shoffner.

"It would be a little tacky in any Super Bowl but it's especially tacky with the way the economy is," he said.
