Long lines at area car washes yesterday and for good reason! It was our warmest day since January 4th and our second warmest day of the year on Thursday.
It was a day we will all remember. The birds were singing and my weather watchers weren't just sending in the good news on how warm it was, but actual wrote me some poems. Check out Kandy Teel's poem above and notice I chose a robin background because I had several robin sightings across the area. As we get closer to Spring we will see more and more of our warm weather friends. Is this unusual? Well not really because there are many robins that do not migrate like they used to and Lafayette's true first sign of Spring is when we see those red-winged blackbirds. It was still exciting seeing the robins and folks taking advantage of the weather by taking nice long walks. You can see why with these weather watcher highs:
Compare and contrast the pictures above with what happened one week ago! Check out the vaporization experiment successfully done by Carol Goodrich with temperatures well below zero. Now that is an impressive cloud created by some incredibly low temperatures.
Things are going to change in a hurry today. You can still wash your car but I would do it first thing this morning our you could be frozen in your car and that would not be good with the weekend upon us! Do not be fooled by the warm start this morning. Take your heavy winter coat to work no matter how warm it feels. I will be back to tell you more about some shocking changes on the way which by Indiana standards are pretty impressive! I will also post the expected snowfall over the next week here shortly which once again shifted Indiana into one of the higher risk areas. The long-range models are still flipping like fish out of water but I know all of us will be ready no matter what nature decides to do next week!

How right you are Mike! We all thank you for all your updates! And I know everybody will be ready for anything! You never know here in Indiana! And what am I doing up????? lol! I got to get to sleep! Been wathcing the maps all night. All enjoy the warm while it last!

Thanks for the update. As an avid bird watcher, the red-winged blackbirds usually make an appearance about the time of the girl's b-ball semistate games. This usually occurs around mid-late February. By the middle of March, the birds can be seen along side most rural roads.
Too bad I was not able to wash my truck yesterday. Oh well, it sounds as if it would have been salt covered by the middle of next week.

My car window have ice on them. Where did that come from? Feels like a light freezing drizzle???
I heard several birds yesterday, with the sun, the blue sky, it made me happy. I am glad we get days like this hear and there. I am going to walk outside again today, soak it up! January is flying by, which is good! We are over the hump. I love it!
Any one know the time line for the wind and cold for today? Temp is 41.7*..
Hey there we will start to see the wind pick up a bit by somethine this afternoon. Colder by later on this evening As the cold front makes its way through our area.
If you pull up some prog charts you will be able to see just where the front is at this time.

Where are the long models coming from? I am not seeing anything.
Justin, what are you on the poss. snow in Tipp co. for next week? I know several days away.
What do I think on the possible snow?
Well As you stated it is still around a week away and maps and models don't always do a great job but in this case I do see a lot of moisture to work with as we head into next week so that should start things.
As for amounts that is still up in the air. The question is going to be will we stay cold or as I should say below freezing. If this next system does move more north and west then the models show which they have done many times in the past and we stay below that freezing mark then I would say we can look for a good snow! I really don't want to give amounts just yet for there is a real good chance it will change from now to then.
As well another chance for a system is on Friday. So the timing is everything. We really just have to keep watching it as things get closer and keep all posted.
And I know this system is giving a lot of forecasters problems. So we just have to see what mother nature wants to do.
I think we all will have a much better idea and can tell you all more as it gets closer. Just hang in there..... ;)

Come on snow!!!!! We need one big blizzard before spring then I will be happy. My Father lives in Fort Wayne and has bragged about all the snow they have had. I want to bragg next. LOL

I think that all of us who want snow should say a prayer to St. Jude...the parton saint of lost causes.
The way this winter has gone so far (snow wise)...I think this would be very appropriate!

Its getting cold out there! temp has dropped almost 11 degrees.
At 9:30 this morn the temp was 43.4* now is 32.2
NO Snow bring on spring:)
Mike...In your next update, would you mind explaining the possible tracks of next weeks storms?...I was worried because most other sources show the moisture and bulk of the storms tracking farther south than us...Laf.

One of the two South Bend TV stations just mentioned a possible storm, with possible ice, for Wed./Thursday. Obviously, there will be much fine tuning to this forecast as the weekend progresses.
I can't wait to hear Mike's latest update. At this time, the wind is blowing, and on my drive home, there was quite a bit of blowing snow crossing the roadway.

My five day model currently shows the heavier moisture going South of us.
Maybe if we all agree to say a prayer to St. Jude at a certain time....all of us who want snow... maybe we can get one of these waves to produce!!

Having fun tracking this system Justin? I have been looking at many radas, and models..Now I know what you and Mike mean by they are flipping around like fish out of the water.

Snow Snow Stay Away!!!
talk about "Indiana weather". I say it will snow next week then spring will arrive the following week. Looking at models very good chance for a snow Tue into Wed looking at 3-4 inches at most. What r your thoughts justin?
Well I was talking with Mike Prangley eariler and we both agree that these systems like to move 100to 150 miles north and west then what the models show. If you pull up just about any model map you will find that the most moisture is to our south! So the thing to keep watch on will be if and when is moves more north and our temperatures stay below freezing!!! If this happens then I think we have a good chance for seeing a bigger snow!
Still it is a ways out and timing will be everything! We all will be sure to fine tune things and time it all out as it gets closer! And a good thing is as it gets closer we are starting to get a handle on it!
Time will tell we just have to keep watching it!
