Bolder Blues & A Bullish Storm Charges Our Way

Usually I go and get a bottle of water out of my cold car between shows but not tonight. I am glued to the latest Precisioncast model runs and have noticed our viewing area is now showing up in some of the heavier snow bands or what I like to call the bolder blues. A first call of 3 to 5 inches for most of our area looks good at this time. The five to eight inch lollipops currently south of Indianapolis I really think may never transpire. They will have too much mixed precipitation involved. This is why I put the 5 to 8 inch band between Indianapolis and just north of Lebanon. But this band may eventually shift into our area a
t the rate we are going. On the evening newscasts we talked about taking it hour by hour with a big thanks to all the bloggers and weather watchers out there helping to keep us ahead of whatever nature dishes out at us. Here is the latest forecast of snowfall between tonight and Wednesday morning as of 7 p.m. I will update this as needed with our main area of low pressure yet to even form. Keep the faith snowmobilers and snow geese!

Yep Mike this is why I would not give up on the 3" to 6" inches and I still like the way this system is heading. I also Think there is a good chance for more. 3" to 6" is still my range and a chance to add on!.

Was watching one of the Indy newscasts at 5:30 and noticed that most of the heavy snow on their map was over our area for tomorrow afternoon and evening, yet they had us in the lowest snowfall total.

I just checked the weather channel and weathbug-both are currently showing less than an inch for West Lafayette. Anyone know anything about this?

Thanks Mike for the updates and the work you are doing! I don't like using/watching the weather channel I find that a lot of times their information is off. -Dustin Monon

Thanks for all of the updates Mike! It is much appreciated!! :-)

Interesting how one station calls for 3-5 for our area and you turn to another and they say 1.2 for the same area. So if your a snow lover you like the former. If not, the later. The plot thickens,

Hey all this is a system to watch it is packing some moisture!

Justin.

Maybe some of you are forgetting this storm is in two parts. I think one comes in tonight and another one comes in tomorrow, right? It is not going to snow all at once as I understand it.

As most of us weather geeks know, when a weather system or systems in this case start to develope, there is alway a contrast from station to station, site to site...

The only reason I check wx bug, accuwx and others are for their radars, not for the forcast.. Many times they have not posted warnings till the storms have started or already passed!

Anonymous said...

yes Justin it is, yet the dew points are very dry at this point...the snow will not reach the ground it the points to not go higher

Oh I know I'M talking about down in Oklahoma, and Missouri, where this system is really taking shape.

I do feel for those who have to deal with all the freezing rain.

Justin.

Anonymous said...

Currently Down in Missouri they have a current temperature of 25 and a Dewpoint of 21 they are very moist.

We will see this moisture work our way before long.

Teri I will be up most if not all night! There is no way I'M going to get to sleep tonight! To much going on! I love this!!!!!

Mike This system is already going more north then the models where showing earlier this afternoon and I still say there is a good chance we may add to our current forecasted amounts!

Justin.

Too bad the storm is being pulled southward. Look at a map.

Anonymous said...

I have been watching the radar returns quite often throughout the day and from I was seeing the precipitation was going more north than to the south of us. I am hoping the snow totals are closer to 8 inches.

Anonymous said...

I just have one thing to say. Mike...you rock!!!

One inch of snow or six inches of snow, you do a fabulous job!

I put gas in the vintage yamaha snowmobile right before work, I am keeping tabs all night along with the Prang Gang, then I will go home at 6:00 sleep till noon and ride until I run out of gas. I HAVE FAITH IN THE MAN UPSTAIRS and his friendly weatherman.

Thanks for the update Mike

Now I have been watching the radar on NOAA.gov and the moisture appears to be heading straight east appearing to go just to the south of Lafayette, more like the Crawfordsville area. Come on storm track go about 50-60 miles to the north.

Anonymous said...

I only half listen to the Indy stations because any community north of Lebanon hardly exists in their forecast mind.
I do like Brian Wilkes on channel 59 because he dares to make long-term predictions like Mike. But there is no blog that matches this one for information and insight.
Thanks to all...in all kinds of weather.

Yes! We should all appreciate this blog!

nws is now talking about sleet in our area tonight with the snow.

Anonymous said...

with the dew point only at 3 isnt the air to dry for it to snow??

Anonymous said...

No not really because in Terre Haute they are reporting light snow with temp./dew point at 22/11

Anonymous said...

the weather bugs map has just put us in the 3-10 !!! It looks like it is shiting to the NORTH

Anonymous said...

looks like moisture is heading south of LAF for tonight

Anonymous said...

Mike....keep up the good work, but in all honesty, if we dont wind up with at least ten inches of snow over the next couple of days where I can use the plow on the truck, I am going to be disappointed once again. Hate those little snows, nothing quite the fun like that when it starts blowing, drifting, etc. Yes, even at 51 years old, it is times like that I still call fun!!!

Anonymous said...

where are you located weatherbug fan?? not getting that info for Lafayette!

I see that our humidity has risen to 50% from 47 when I came home from work. Doesn't that mean we are getting more moisture in the air?

Issued by The National Weather Service
Indianapolis, IN
7:56 pm EST, Mon., Jan. 26, 2009

... WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 AM EST WEDNESDAY...

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 AM EST WEDNESDAY.

A PROLONGED PERIOD OF WINTRY WEATHER IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP AS A COUPLE OF WEATHER DISTURBANCES MOVE ACROSS THE AREA. ONE DISTURBANCE WILL BRING SNOW AND SLEET TO THE AREA TONIGHT... AND A SECOND ONE WILL BRING MORE SNOW TUESDAY AFTERNOON INTO EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING. SNOWFALL AMOUNTS OF 2 TO 5 INCHES ARE EXPECTED FROM NORTH TO SOUTH IN THE ADVISORY AREA.

SNOW AMOUNTS MAY BE REFINED AS THE TRACK OF THE SYSTEM BECOMES BETTER DEFINED. STAY TUNED FOR THE LATEST FORECASTS FOR THIS DEVELOPING SITUATION.

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SNOW MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW WILL CAUSE PRIMARILY TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SNOW COVERED ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES... AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING.

i just checked weatherbug for West Lafayette where I live and it is now calling for sleet and ice tonight and light snow tomorrow. all in all it called for less than an inch of sleet tonight and less than an inch of snow tomorrow. weather channel is now calling for less than an inch of snow for West Lafayette total. I have lived in the Lafayette area for close to 18 years and I have learned to throw out all forcasts b/c weather here does what it wants-I have seen forcasts for 1 inch of snow and seen us get close to 15 inches and forcasts for 10 inches and seen us get less than an inch. I just filled up my car-made sure I have an emergency kit in it and figured I will go to work tomorrow like normal and see what happens. I honestly believe in all the places I have lived as an army brat Indiana as to have the strangest weather and I think Mike does a great job keeping us up to date on what is going on and does a great job for having to deal with such a strange area weather wise! Keep up the good work Mike and thank you for all the nights you have spent up keeping us updated on what is going on. Also thank you to Justin, Teri, Mary Anne and the other bloggers who also work so hard to let us know what is going on! You are greatly appreciated!

Anonymous said...

The humidity is 58% in LAF. yet dew point at 3. Its the dew points you have to watch..We are just goinig to have round #1 tonight of 1-3 inches and round #2 could bring 2-3 inches..yet all is still up in the air haha

Funny what I just heard on TV, "double trouble weather systems, not only for those who are wanting an exact forcast, also for the forcasters who get it wrong":)

As we all know this is a tricky system..All of the Metoroligists I have been watching on TV are doing their best to keep us updated..I think many are getting frustrated..and working hard as OUR MIKE IS to keep us informed.

Just hang tight, and what will be will be! at least I am ready, and will not gripe if there is only a little snow or several inches.

Justin you there???

Great note Shawna...I agree with you !! All the bloggers do a great job. I have found nothing like this website and its bloggers.

Greatly appreciated also !!

The FOX station out of Indy said the advisories may need changed to warnings tomorrow because the newest data shows the 2nd part moving further north and packing more moisture then previously indicated. Waiting to see what Mike has to say now.

Anonymous said...

Yes I'M here I have been looking at Maps currents radars and anything I can think of to stay on top!

Justin.

Anonymous said...

Got off of work at 9:30....I agree with Justin/Mike....I still think 5 inches is the good average for most locations in our area....I am hoping for 6!!

I'm rooting for 8in. Every one pray to the snow gods

Justin, what are you seeing at this time? I have not been following..as I normally do. Need to get some sleep for up at 5:00 for me!

Chris I enjoy your postings.

sorry I do not see it moving to the north..I see it to the south of Tipp Co and moving to the North East! Keeping us out

Anonymous said...

Chris are you when you say St. Jude are you referring to Saint Jude All Nations House Of Prayer, Illinois, United States HAMMweather??

Anonymous said...

We have to remember it is coming in two parts. The first is not expecting a whole lot! Tomorrow will be a wild weather filled day. We are currently looking for some heaver bands through out the day tomorrow off and on.

I still think we will hit in between that 3" to 6" mark. We will have to keep a close eye on how this system tracks and remember this system can go to our north which would bring the higher amounts to us. Just as well as it can go the other way. These systems move all over. So we need to remember that.

I still will not count anything out. We will keep watching the ice down in the indy area just to be safe and keep all posted as things keep moving forward.

Justin.

Anonymous said...

I just watched Brina Wilkes on Fox59, he said second system shifting to the north however he still keeps Indy in an area up to 10 inches with Lafayette only in less than 2 inches, kind of don't make since with second system shifting to the north. Guess we will have to wait and see what Mike says, hope he posts soon

Anonymous said...

I just know that St. Jude is the patron saint for lost causes. This winter has been a bust to this point.

The models ARE moving the main storm farther north. I have Indianapolis in an 8 in band....with ice just to the south. Areas in the WSWarning like Seymour and points south may have big ice issues. I think 3-6 is a good bet....like I said....5 inches is a good round number. I am expecting NOTHING in my snow gauge tonight.

Chris in Tipton

Anonymous said...

shoot looks like no snow tonight grr! Oh well.

Anonymous said...

no major snow storms in the Lafayette area is getting really discouraging, I mean really if it isn't going to snow then it might as well get warm. I would be happy if we would get a snowstorm on a weekly basis.

wishing it would snow

Jesus is in control of all things!!! He died on the cross for our salvation. He also has the master plan for all things here on earth. I am sorry if I am out of line here. I am not trying to stir up anything. If we get snow we get the snow it is out of our hands, but it is fun trying to forcast an estimated total. Keep up the good work all.

God Bless all of you Bloggers

Down in Bloomington we are up to a solid two inches at least and it's still falling pretty heavily!! I always get jealous when I'm down here at school and miss out on the big snows at home!! But this system seems to be favoring the south so far!

Here's hoping that the rest of Indiana gets as lucky as we have been down here tonight!

Anonymous said...

Chris in Tipton I too enjoy your posts! and what I really like about all the postings are they are POSITIVE! YAY!! Gotta stay nice on here. Mike does his best to keep us informed.

I see someone posted how each system does what it wants to despite forecasts, and that is what we all have to keep in mind. Winter and summer, they have minds of their own.

Take care all and I will see you in the AM.
