Biggest Snowstorm in a Year Leaves Lafayette Reeling

I had to take a break shoveling. We have had officially 5.1" of snow here on the southside of Lafayette, although 6" totals are being found in many parts of Tippecanoe County including Battle Ground. I am not expecting any more accumulation with just a few leftover flurries this morning, but the roads are atrocious. Fifteen minute drives around the area are taking 45 minutes and some secondary roads look more like sledding hills with at least 4 inches of snow on the road. Reports to our south out of Clinton County are not good. If you get off the main arteries or state roads things are quite treacherous. It was certainly the right decision to close schools around the area. The last time we had this much snow in Lafayette was on February 1st of last year when we had 7.6 inches of snow, so it has been almost a year and we were certainly due.

The good news is blowing and drifting snow does not look like a big concern today with north to northwest winds remaining at 10 mph or less, but this could change late tonight and Thursday. I expect southwest winds to pick up to 10 to 20 mph causing some drifting problems on some north-south roads. The reason for this is we have a clipper coming our way but it looks like it will produce more wind than snow at this point. I will talk more about this tonight and here on the blog later. Here are some preliminary snowfall totals I have in and of course we will add pictures and finalize things by tonight's newscasts. My girls are excited with their snow day.

Preliminary Snowfall Totals:

Michigantown 7.5"
Crawfordsville 7.0"
Covington 6.5"
Frankfort 6.3"
Battle Ground 6.0"
Kokomo 6.0"
Peru 6.0"
Lafayette 5.1"
Brookston 5.0"
Delphi 5.0"
Monticello 4.5"
Logansport 4.0"
Remington 3.1"
Kentland 3.0"
Rensselaer 2.5"

Make sure you take frequent breaks shoveling. I can skip my run today because you exert way more energy than you think so be careful. More tidbits on the way and have a great day.

I hope all those sceptics believe you the next time... 6-8 you hit the target Mike. Way to go

Thank you for the update. Rochester still has flurries, and I can feel the sun!!!!

From what I have heard, the clipper is not expected to drop a lot of snow. South Bend is calling for a light dusting. Hope this helps.

Mike was the ONLY one right about this and he was right about a week out. But even if he had been wrong, I'm still proud of him. Thanks for sticking with us, Mike.

Have fun in the snow mike with your kids as well! I'll catch up with you all later!

I would enjoy the snowday more if it wasn't for the fact that it messes up the entire school calendars with make-up days and puts the graduation dates of many school systems in jeopardy. Graduation is the most important time in a high school senior's life and the uncertainty of the date of the ceremony makes it difficult on many levels. I am a teacher and parent of a senior so I know the stress these weather systems create. I LOVE snow....and I don't mind make-up days for undergrads...but those poor seniors!! My baby girl is stressing bullets when we got the "no school" call at 5:20 this morning. I just heard her wait "Noooooooo".

Considering the area Mike forecasts for I'd say his prediction of 3-8 inches was exact. Here is what the totals are for the areas he has to cover:

Michigantown 7.5"
Crawfordsville 7.0"
Covington 6.5"
Frankfort 6.3"
Battle Ground 6.0"
Kokomo 6.0"
Peru 6.0"
Lafayette 5.1"
Brookston 5.0"
Delphi 5.0"
Monticello 4.5"
Logansport 4.0"
Remington 3.1"
Kentland 3.0"
Rensselaer 2.5"

Looks to me like he got it exact!

Mike...when is the NEXT system to watch out for? I don't mean the little clipper systems...but what you are thinking some days out?
Because that's what sets you apart from countless other meterologists...sharing your educated thoughts long term.
I like that! Keep up the great work.

Thanks for all of your hard work and dedication to the Lafayette and surrounding communities, Mike. We are very lucky to have an accurate weatherman such as yourself. I'm proud to have you predicting weather for us.

Tippecanoe Co. - Level 3 Advisory - Unnecessary Travel Discouraged
Ok I'm confused? If we ahve this Advisory WHY IS THE LAFAYETTE SCHOOLS IN SESSION? They did'nt even have a delay! I guess they care more about make-up days then the safty of our children! The side roads are bad and some of our children have to walk in this to school and people have'nt had time to shovel their walks by 8 am when they have to head out! SHAME ON THE LAFAYETTE SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR NOT CARING!

Hey Mike, aren't you glad you already got the golden shovel over with? If I remember correctly you had to hurry over to shovel the one inch before it melted.

Across from McCutcheon here....measured the snow in several places & got 6 inches even to just above 6 inches. Kids are having a blast in the snow! Hubby wasn't too thrilled with the condition of the roads on the drive to work though....

Finally we got some snow!!! THis storm makes the top ten biggest for indianapolis.. #6, i think.. not sure on that number yet... anyhow.. at last check (11:30). snow was beginging to fall again on the south side of indy.. as of last check officialy at nws in indy 12.4 inches.. and here at my home on the south side just off of 65, 13.2 inches. . . Brind on the next system !!! lol . Please everyone stay safe.. .. as of last check counties issueing state of emergencies include. Morgan, Sullivan, Debois, Clark, and Posey unties.. many roads closed or very dangerous all over central indiana.. interstate 70 is closed near st road 39. do to wrecks and slide offs trying to be cleaned up.. if you must get out. take it slow.. many roads have not been plowed in indy, and i would assume in most other areas as well.. Mike what a great job forecasting this one... Thanks..

Thanks Mike! You are amazing and we love you in Montgomery County! Your predictions are right on target, and we knew they would be. Thankfully, there is no wind and the drifts are not too bad yet!

LOL William, I read your post from Early this morining..regarding throwing a snowball at Justin and it hit me...

What time did you throw that darn thing anyway..Now I know where to put the blame when I went to clean off my car this am..It looked as though the street dept plowed my whole street and dumped the snow on my car:)

I work at one of the schools that did not have a delay or cancel..Got an early start and all was fine..a bit slow going thats all.. cleaning off the car was the hard part! I had snow up to my knees..which is about 17" from drifting snow.

LOL William about thowing the snowball at Justin and it hit me!
What time time did you throw that snowball??

Now I know who to blame when I went to clean off my car this morn. A giant snowball!

It looked like the street dept plowed half of my street and dumped the all the snow on my car..

I work for a school that was not under a delay or cancelation, all went fine..no problems,,had to take it slow thats all..

However cleaning off my car was the hard part, thank you William, LOL! I had drifts up to my knees, which is about 17"..

Now back at ya!!

Beautiful out there, the main roads in town are not bad..

Wow im excited that we actually got a storm with at least 5" I was starting to worry that we weren't gonna get any storm this winter.

Thanks Mike for all You've done.

I stayed up until 3:30....watching and measuring....we went from pretty heavy snow at 3:00 to almost flurries at 3:30....so I called it a night. I KNEW it was just a matter of 2 hours before my superintendent would call it a DAY for me!!...and he did.

We ended up with just over 9 inches of snow from this system in Tipton...my mom in Hamilton Co said that they are over 11 inches there...and there were reports of upwards of 13 inches in Marion Co.

I would like to see some wind come in this afternoon/this evening...I think drifts are cool!!!

Hey mike just came in from the barn and we have clear skies, cold temps, and a pretty stiff wind. Windchills could be a factor tonight.

Anonymous said...

I just can't help but noticce how the Indy weather forecasters are priding themselves on the great way they forecasted this storm.
Last weekend, precious few of them gave any mention of a potential storm brewing. It's a lot easier to forecast a storm when it is knocking on your doorstep!
So, Mike, again...many of us appreciate the way you "stick your neck out" to keep us alert and updated.
It takes a lot of "guts" to do that!
Thank you!

Anybody know what the conditions are suppose to be for Friday morning? I have to drive my daughter to the Indy Airport her flight leaves at 9am!

Thanks!

Anonymous said...

LOL Teri I have already thought of that! You know me Weather and Football are my two fav things! That is why I liked Mikes name for this system so much :-)

I feel it is still around four days away and a lot can change so I as well as all you will keep watching and see how things look a little closer!

I have been looking at some long range maps and I see we may have more moisture to work with a little latter on next week! You Bet I will be watching it! ;-)

Mike it is cold out with a temperature of 10.2* degrees as of 10:59pm. Also All watch for gusty winds for tomorrow and later tonight! Watch for Ice!

I'M happy I can get some sleep tonight. Last Night I was up watching things until 4:am. The was up at 8:30am And headed out to start doing the shoveling. A big day it was and I'M starting to run on empty! lol..........

From what I can tell....the storm for early next week looks to be a Gulf storm...with plenty of gulf moisture....it will lift NE towards New England. Exactly where it tracks will determine if it has any real affect on our weather. RIGHT NOW...we could be on the western edge....as we know...things can change!!!
