Thunderstorms With Lightning & Heavy Downpours on the Way

Forget the packing of the suit case. I will just get on the plane tomorrow morning with my family. That is all that really matters, doesn't it. Speaking of keeping everybody's family safe, there is a line of thunderstorms in Illinois that I have been tracking. It will not warrant a weather watch for us here in Indiana but it should still have plenty of lightning, heavy downpours, and wind gusts near 40 mph by time it arrives in our viewing area after 10 p.m.

Severe weather reports in Illinois have been very sporadic and this line has gone from producing near 10,000 bolts of lightning per hour down to about 6,000 bolts per hour as of 8:41 p.m. It will continue to weaken as it moves into a more stable air mass here at home, but it should be quite a dazzling light display and some areas could still pick up a quick one to two inches of rain. I will keep you updated.

Yes Mike we could easily see heavy downpoors as well a possile quater size hail and moderate wind damage also the clouds are between 450FT and 600FT.

Justin.

Ahhhh..there is our Mike with a wx update! Teri and I have been tracking these storms for quite some time. She, more than me, but for the past couple hours I have watched that bow echo move ever so quickly towards us. I do see weakening in that line now, thankfully. I have seen reports in IL of winds to 52 and 68 mph with damage. we do NOT need that! Let Julie pack for ya, Mike and keep us updated, LOL!

Justin, nice to see ya back been quiet for the last couple of days weather wise.

Anonymous said...

Looking at the latest cloud maps this system has weaken a little when clouds were at 600FT and now 500FT to 550FT as well as hail was at quater size and now at marble size so hopefuly this system will stay on this track and keep weaking. Mike way to go out with a bang!!! LOL... still lightning is going to be a main facter. as well as heavy downpoors.

Justin.

Justin, I hope these storms will die down, looked scary for some time!

Well what can I say the whole WLFI viewing area is going to see this one and still right now radar is showing some possible dime size hail down by fountain co, which would be just east of chempaign I'll, moveing around 38Mph. hopefuly it will keep weakning.

Justin.

Anonymous said...

Still the only warning I can find is a flood warning all the way in chempaign I'LL, the storms clouds are now between 450FT and 500FT so still looking good Iam not finding any hail for our viewing area as well ether.

Good morning, Justin, Teri, Renee, and Brow, plus those who have no name, LOL! Brow, it was headed right at us and stalled out on the state line. I had two rumbles thunder and .18 inches rain. I agree with Teri, I love hearing the sounds of a summer night and will be glad when the humidty, AND TEMPS, drop at night so I can have the windows open again.

Today I spend a hot one at Fountain Park for lunch. NO AC in that hotel, but I think I can make it for an hour or so w/o AC, LOL!!

Later....hey, Justin, where do you get your info on the cloud heights and the size of hail in a given storm cell?

Mary Anne, let me know when you get home!

Teri in Laf

Anonymous said...

Is that line going to move in to Tipp Co???

Anonymous said...

Well there has been more hail signs pop up in this system right now look's to be sizes between marble to nickel size. this system is moveing south east at around 38MPH. So will we see this. It still has time to take a new path so we need to keep a close eye on it and Im sure we all can pull through.
I'll keep an eye on things and keep you all posted.

Justin.

Anonymous said...

That derecho hit Minnesota early this A.M. packing winds from 80-115 mph. Same system moving to IL and later in In. Still packing high winds. I think the winds have died a bit but still could knock down trees and power lines.

Teri

Anonymous said...

Looks like its still holding together at this time, bowing!!

Anonymous said...

Justin do you think these storms will hit tipp countie?

Anonymous said...

Hold on to your hats!

Anonymous said...

I do think we will see something out of this also we are in a slight risk for severe weather for today and tomorrow so we all need to be ready for anything.

Right now some places still could see possible hail around marble size. Now this system has showed signs of weakning and right now look's like the most of the hail is staying north maybe just north of jasper co, still it has time to change so let's all keep a close eye on it!!!

Justin.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Brian for the frequent updates! Justin I will be watching!

Anonymous said...

Things in this system are really dieing off still newton and jasper co, could see heavy rains and possible marble size hail.

Justin.

Anonymous said...

Dose anyone know how Mary anne is? look's like parts of jasper countie got some hail.

Justin.

Anonymous said...

Right now I think Mary Ann is up the area where the worst of the storms are hitting!!!! Waiting for her to check in, she is not in Rem. unless she is just returning home.

Justin.

Anonymous said...

Justin, I am willing to bet Mike and family are having a great time!

Its just as hot in Fl as is in Indiana, well maybe:) but they have the wonderful sea breeze...ahh!!! Lucky them!

I sure hope we do not get severe storms tomorrow, but sounds likely. Not a drop of rain today where I am located. Was hoping not to have to water the flowers.

Glad to hear Our friend MA is safe and sound, wonder what her knuckles look like after driving just ahead of the bad storms up north. Mary Anne Can you type or do you have cramps in the fingers from holding on the steering wheel? LOL

Night all.

Teri

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the well wishes, Justin.

LOL...got the cramps out of those fingers, Teri :-) I do NOT like driving in storms when I am away from my radars, LOL! I thought about stopping at the State Police post in Lowell to see what conditions were like, but...if I had stopped I would have been caught once again in that storm. So, I kept driving south and got ahead of it.

Now I wait to see if storms will fire toward dawn here. Some sites are saying so. ugh....

MA

Anonymous said...

Holy CRAPPOLA....I just saw intense pecip report in Crown Point of .73 rain in FOURTEEN minutes (that is where I was today) and in Merrillville which is just a few miles north they had 1.41 inches in 45 minutes! See why I kept driving south, LOL>???

I totally forgot that Mike was taking a blog-break so I have just been waiting for a new post. :p

Im getting some info for pulaski, counite, that there is a possible dopplar indicated tornado for that area. that ayatem is moveing south east at 20 MPH.

Thing's are now quiteing down in the northern counties as the cold front is now makeing it's way in to centrual indana and slowly makeing it's way to the south east as well as what's left of the storms. There is still some severe thunderstorms watches out for some of the northern counties which they should be expiring here later this evening. There saying that there is a chance of some poping up in I'LL and that by the time they get here they could be severe so we just have to watch.

Justin.

Anonymous said...

Ok I have looked at the map's and got my info here it is.

It all lie's with this darn cold front as always it is takeing it's sweet old time in getting out of here which is giveing these storms time to fire up and as of now anyone who dose see these storms could see heavy rainfall high winds and possible hail.

Ok cloud hight helps to tell how bad a storm is when your clouds are around 300FT to 350FT it is not a bad storm but when your clouds get to be 450FT 500FT 600FT and even 700FT it is a severe thunder storm really when it gets to 500FT and above it is strong.

There is some severe thunderstorm watches out in some parts of I'LL, were some of these storms are coming from so it is possible that some of our counties could get put in one before long we will just have to wate and see.

There is a tornado warning out for areas like kankakee I'LL, This system looks to be heading right to newton and jasper countie, they could see MOD wind damage and possible dime size hail. Clouds for this system is around 650FT.

Justin.

Anonymous said...

The system in jasper co, is moveing ESE at 46MPH still they could see high wind gusts and possible small hail so mary anne stay safe and let us know how you are as soon as you can.

Justin.

Anonymous said...

Here at 7:44 we in tippecanoe could start to see some high wind gusts and possible hail places like nweton and jasper co, need to be ready and or take cover because the system that was showing rotation in kankakee I'LL is now moveing over head. you as well could see damageing winds and possible hail.

Justin.

Justin, so the main threat seems to be north of Tippe? I am not familiar with these Illinois and Indiana towns, looks bad all over to me! I saw the tornado warning in Ill.

A severe thunderstorm warning has just been put in to place for benton and jasper countie,

Justin.

Anonymous said...

This warning is till 8:00am.

Justin.

Anonymous said...

Looks like the tornado warning has been canceled for out west but it looks like that same hot spot is heading right our way.

What a rough night! I remember dozing off around 12:30am and finally caught a glimps of Brian talking about the tornado warning in Benton county.

Hang tight everyone because there are to be some rewarding and cooler temps after this mess passes us all today.

When's Mike coming back? The Weather Channel is so concerned about whats going on with the current Hurricane that they hardly even mention anything about us Hoosiers. :)

I'm keeping my eyes glued to the radar and here.

Anonymous said...

Fountain co , could see high winds and heavy downpoors,

Mike is coming back around the 10th.

Justin.

i HATE stormy nights...hard on my habit of sleeping :-) I had a total, in two hour increments, four hours sleep. Between thunder and WX radio going off I was like a bouncing ball around here. Thankfully we dodged last night's derecho. The storms that rolled in here about 6:30 a.m. have left 1.68 inches rain and LOTS of lightning & thunder. We were under a storm warning which has now expired. I saw rain totals approaching 6 inches around Crown Point area. WE do NOT need that!

Stay tuned to wx today, we could get round two (or is that #25??) anytime today. I just keep thinking about that cooler, and drier air promised!

Ok Im up Im up. I have 1.40 in the gage and my sweet corn is on the ground as well as everything else in the garden. Grrr.. Tree limbs down all the way to rensselaer. Water in the fields, road ditches and on the road so be safe. The winds are still strong. The winds pushed my flag pole over almost to the ground and its 3ft in the ground with concrete at the bottom. The courthouse looks like a castle with a mote around it. Everyone seems safe though. I heard BC had a touchdown with damage?? A house and some barns pretty messed up. william in remington.

Things are looking good at this point. I just went out to check the rain gauge and we got 2 inches here by the fairgrounds.

Justin.
