A Stormy Start to Fair Week As 60 mph Gusts Barrel Through the Area

You see the popular orange and lemon shake-ups at the fair. Nature gave us its own version of shaking things up. Luckily for us the worst of the wind missed the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds. But the fairs going on up in White County and Jasper County were not so lucky.
It was quite a start to fair week here and it lived up to its stormy reputation. Wind gusts up to 60 mph hit the area with reports of tree limbs and trees down from near Morocco to Medaryville, Royal Center, and near Nead in Miami County. Wind speeds were closer to 40 mph here in Tippecanoe County at the Fairgrounds. Now the next big question is if we will have any more severe weather. Well, we are still in a slight risk through this evening. While our atmosphere has stabilized quite a bit the sunshine is popping back out and this could spark a few more thunderstorms. I think the biggest threats will once again be lightning, brief heavy downpours, and isolated damaging wind gusts. Our weather team will keep you updated on this and the good news is that any more severe weather that does pop should be much more isolated than we saw this morning.

Also, thanks for your patience on Live Doppler 18. As you know we have done a complete overhaul on it and in this transition we have run into a few problems matching the base maps and the radar echoes up. This problem will be resolved ASAP and we are working on it as I type this. The good news is we have not one but two back-up systems to keep you and your families safe which includes Precision 18. Have a great evening and thanks for all those that came out to the Zoo Run Run this weekend and it was also great meeting a lot of folks out at the High School Musical. The play certainly lived up to all the hype! Speaking of good news you will want to tune in tonight for the latest on when real relief arrives in your forecast! Nature's free air conditioning is on the way!

Hi bloggers, it has been a busy day for me and for you guys watching the wx. I did not have time to do weather watching. My weather alarm went off several times, I would turn to the blog to find out what was going on.You bloggers are the best!

Looks as another pop up in Il, keeping on the same track as this afternoon? I hope it runs out of steam before crossing into IN.

Thanks Justin. According to NOAA, we are in a slight risk for severe weather, with a 40% chance of thunderstorms, but we have a watch box. Kind of conflicting messages, uncertainty. Any update from Mike? This front will weaken as it approaches?

Looking forward to cooler, less humid weather.

So far we have been lucky in the Lafayette/West Lafayette area - but I wonder if we will get those storms this evening?

It is great news to have a bit of cooler weather.

Thanks for the update

Here is the latest.

I think the system is starting to move south so if you are in fountain, vermillion, or any of the south counties then be ready and stay safe right now the clouds are at 650FT with MESO han HAIL they are moveing around 35 to 40 MPH. This dose not mean tipp is in the clear for this my still move again!!! Don't worrie Mary anne Im watching you too.

Justin.

That is better news for us Justin. I was wondering why we have only a 40% chance of storms but it looks like it is gaining strength and heading for us here in Tippe. Thanks for the directional insight. I will check in later if the radio goes off again.

By 10:00pm the storms should be in champaign I'LL, still looking on track I still think this system will stay just south of tipp maybe south fountain will see this. still a close call. Newton and Jasper looking good at this point!!!

Justin.

Anonymous said...

Well look's like we are going to luck out again from these storms!

Still vermillion countie needs to keep an eye out. I even think fountain will be ok. Still I will be right here and wont go anywere till we have the all clear. We are not out of the woods right yet. By that I mean there still could be a pop up rain or even a thunderstorm so I will keep a close eye.

Justin.

Anonymous said...

there are many pop ups in mi, that are heading to the south east,

Anonymous said...

Wow..that is one wicked looking line of storms heading at us. I mean ALL of us. I just did a plot of which direction the storms are headed and some are moving straight east. I just did another look and think the worst will miss me, but the rest of you better duck. Just kidding! Justin will take great care of you. Thanks for being on the watch, Justin.

River Lover! haven't seen you around lately, good to hear from you!

ML i wanted to post to you today as my DD lives in CT. She says they dont have bad storms out there! This is something we live with all year long as you witnessed in January with the flooding here. While that was unusal even for us, we do have thunderstorms most months of the year. I'd like a cement room, completely furnished!

Take care, all and we shall keep watching.

Careful all. Be safe, I might be turning off the lights and computer and enjoy the light show. Still watching the radar a little longer though:)
