Live Doppler 18 Is On Alert for Wind & Flooding

Hello! I hope you are having a great day. Get to the pool while you can. I am still thinking thunderstorms will start firing up after 3 p.m. Our main severe weather threat for wind damage will be between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. and then training thunderstorms which could cause localized flooding will be our main threat after 7 p.m. tonight.

Remember your lightning safety rules and do not let your guard down when it comes to flooding. Most folks do not understand the power of water. Only one to two feet of water can sweep a vehicle away and every one foot rise in a water level exerts an additional 500 pounds of force on your car, which in essence makes your car 500 pounds lighter in a flooded roadway. Just think of how much easier it is to pick up somebody in a pool than outside it. This is the same concept. Unfortunately in this case it will be your car being picked up.

Straight-line winds also need to be taken seriously. New statistics in from NOAA confirm that twice as many people are hurt or injured with straight-line winds as EF-0 and EF-1 tornadoes. Incredible but true! Stay alert this evening and if at all possible limit your time outside or driving around in your car. If you can do this your chances of staying safe are much greater. I will keep you updated on the tube throughout the evening. Now it is off to work I go. Bloggers do your thing and I will check back with you if needed.

Thanks Mike and Justin for your timelines, I would have asked for them soon anyway. Mike, what is the current thinking on lightening safety for indoor swimming pools? In the past few weeks there ahs been some confusion on the safely of swimming indoors during storms, should everyone get out of the water to be safe? Many people with years of experience were back and forth about this, at local indoor pools, some lifeguards tell you to get out, some don't.

Hi ML you might want to check out this site NLSI, Indoor pool safety) Hope it helps.

Teri, I read it over quickly, thanks. Some of the workers at the pool said that the building and pool are protected, some did not. We erred on the side of safety and got out of the pool and pool area as the storm passed, the building lost power soon afterward. But no one could give us a definte answer, I will inquire there about their policy again since all should be in agreement, no one knew much at the time.

Im seeing some thunderstorms starting to fire up just south of I'LL as well as some in I'LL so watching them closely.

They are moveing east north east around 23 knots (28 mph). No watches or warnings so far will keep you posted... Still best chances between 4:00pm and 8:00pm.

It's a system we need to watch it's going to be close.

But do know that there is always time for it to change. And to hope for the best but be ready for the worst.

Looks like storm spotters will be busy tonight. I have my coffee ready. The moisture on the ground already will surly help feed what is headed our way. Mike what are the rivers looking like right now? MA how is the creek next to you? could be a long night. William in Remington.

Just noticed the tornado warning out west...not sure if its coming right in line with us or not.

The thing is that by the time that cell does get to Indiana, it may have lost most of its juice and die out.

William....creek has gone down :-) Ground is very saturated. If we get that heavy, training rain we are in trouble!

keep your eyes open for me (us). I have a meeting at church at 7:00 which will last a couple hours. I will be away from my puter until later.

Dang another tornado warning popped up in IL.

Maybe another 4hrs before we see any signs of it?

That IL cell that is tor warned is within a severe tunderstorm watch. At this time the storms to the east of us (did you know there were warned cells close to Ft Wayne earier?) and those in IL are robbing the strength from us. Thank the Good Lord for that! Not to wish anyone severe wx :-) At least maybe this will be over for us by 10-11 PM??

MA be safy.

So far the only report I have seen has been a wind report.
We can expect to be in a thunderstorm watch here before long.

Right now I am watching 2 or 3 lines of storms forming in IL. Yep, headed this way. If you are watching a radar most have the ability to show movement. It is fascinating to watch the lines of storms form and move!
